About Kukur Tihar
Kukur (dog) Tihar or Khicha Puja by the Newars, is celebrated on the second day of the five-day Tihar festival by the Gorkhas. Kukar-Tihar is day of worship and appreciation of dogs by the Gorkhas around the globe. Tihar in Gorkha community represents the divine attachment between Human and other animals.
Why Do We Observe Kukur (dog) Tihar?
Dog is believed to be messenger of Lord Yamaraj , the God of death, by the Gorkhas. Hence God the messenger of the God of death is worshiped once a year on this day. It is said dog can see endangers and the death coming.
Kukur, the dog, Puja is observed by putting a red tika on dog’s forehead and flower (saipatri) garland around the neck offering him foods and sel roti to acknowledge the cherished relationship between humans and the dogs. Generally male dogs are worshiped.
