The announcement comes less than a month after GNLF supporters from the localities joined Gurung's Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

Today, Gurung and GTA officials inspected Rock Garden and Gangamaya Park, popular tourist spots around 10km from Darjeeling. No major repairs have been carried out in the two places that are adjacent to each other after Aila.

"We will make the area even better. Nothing has happened here for some time now. Politics was not right earlier. Now there is peace. With peace, there will be development and with development, there will be economic benefit for the people," Gurung said.

Even after the Morcha was formed in 2007, the Rock Garden area remained a GNLF stronghold till recently. The political equations of the locality changed after 60-odd GNLF supporters switched over to the Morcha on November 8.

Today, Gurung said the GTA would build guesthouses in the area. "We want tourist to stay here overnight."

Binay Tamang, executive GTA Sabha member in whose constituency the area is, said: "Rock Garden and Gangamaya Park would be renovated at Rs 17 crore. Of this, Rs 13 crore will be released immediately. We have earmarked Rs 4 crore for a ropeway from Dali to Rock Garden (about 1km) and Rs 8 crore has been earmarked for road and bridges from Gangamaya to Sidrabong through Orange Valley (about 12km)."

Gurung today welcomed 125 Trinamul supporters from Lower Ging area here to his party.

Yesterday, 180 members of the Trinmaul union of GTA employees, Darjeeling Himalayan Karmachari Sangatan, had joined the Morcha.
