AAGSU placed decade long demand of Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC) to PM, Narendra Modi, in Guwahati. The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) the influential apex students and youth organization of the Gorkhas of Assam along with 26 community organizations and few civil society organizations yesterday met India’s prime minister Narendra Modi in Guwahati during his maiden visit to Assam and Northeast on 29th November 2014 in Raj Bhawan, Guwahati.
AAGSU delegation lead by its president Prem Tamang and general secretary Bharat Chhetry met and felicitated the Prime Minister with a Gorkha traditional Bhaadgoanley cap and neck skirf khada and placed before the PM Gorkhas of Assam decade long demand of creation of Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC) along with eight other demands that includes ST status to Khambu (Rai), Limboo, Sherpa, Tamang, Magar, Gurung and SC status to Kami, Damai, Sarki, Gaine and Bhujel and others in central OBC list, declaration of flood of Assam as national problem, preservation and protection of one horned rhino, special status to Gorkhas in defence and declaration of Bharti Dwitya (Bhai Dhooj) as national holiday.
Talking to mediapersons here in Guwahati today AAGSU president Prem Tamang said,’The Hon’ble PM gave a patient hearing to the demands of Gorkhas of Assam.’ All legitimate and genuine demands with purview of Constitution of India will be taken care , the prime minister informed the delegation’ said Tamang.
‘I am happy that the amidst busy schedule, he could find time to connect with people through community organizations and CSOs and his response to most of us with presence of mind was overwhelming, I am thankful the BJP Mps of the state Rameswar Teli, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Ram Prasad Sharma for their support and I must specially mention and thank Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports’ Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal for briefing to Prime Minister regarding the Gorkhas of the state during our meeting and for facilitating it’, said the AAGSU president.
Prime Minister Modi has invited AAGSU to New Delhi to further discuss the matter incorporated in the memorandum. ‘We are likey to go New Delhi in 2nd week of January to meet the PM once again and discuss GAC in Assam and our other demands inclusions of tribes of Gorkha in central ST, SC and others in OBC listetc. . It will depend on his schedule and PMO’s confirmation.’ added Tamang . Gorkhas of the state are thankful to Prime Minister Modi in this regard.
