Film director and actor Kaushik Ganguly would also be given the award, Deb said at a news conference here.

"It has been decided that Wriddhiman Saha and Bharat Chhetri, who are both from the town and have made Siliguri proud in the international sports arena, would be awarded the Bangaratna. We will also felicitate prominent film director-turned-actor Kaushik Ganguly with the award. Some others would also be felicitated but their names would be finalised later," Deb said.

"We have contacted both Wriddhiman and Bharat. While Wriddhiman is in Australia as a member of the Indian cricket team, Bharat is out of the state. We hope that they will make it to the event. We are yet to get a confirmation."

Wriddhiman, from Shaktigarh in Siliguri, is in Australia as the second wicket keeper of the squad.

His Test debut in the national team was in January 2010, against South Africa. Wriddhiman has also played for the KKR in the Indian Premier League. In 2014, he was in the Kings XI Punjab team.

Bharat is a former Indian men's hockey team captain who had represented the national side in the Sultan Azlan Sha Cup in Malaysia and London Olympics in 2012. He is from Kalimpong in Darjeeling district. His parents live at Mechibari on the outskirts of Siliguri. Bharat is currently not in the Indian squad.

The Bangaratna award given by the state includes a cheque for Rs 1 lakh, a citation, a memento and a shawl.
