MLA from Kalimpong and GJM leader Harka Bahadur Chettri submitted a memorandum to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the demand to provide a district status for Kalimpong.
In a goodwill gesture, the MLA also presented an orchid bouquet to the chief minister along with the memorandum. The demand has also of late started gaining momentum in the town, with reports of rallies and dharnas to support the demand.
Mamata reached Kalimpong during the day as part of her three-day north Bengal tour. She attended an administrative meeting at Suntaleykhola, where she discussed about the various ongoing and pending developmental works.
Following the meeting she travelled seven-km on foot to a forest resort. While on the way she exchange greetings with the people of the town and accepted pleasantries.
