It has invited TRS leaders along with central BJP leaders and M.P.s for a two-day national seminar in Darjeeling on Gorkhaland. BJP national executive member Subramanyam Swami has been invited. He is now said to be in favour of creation of separate Gorkhaland state.

Tilted ‘National Seminar on Creation of Gorkhaland and Smaller States,’ it will be organized by the Study Forum, which is GJM’s intellectual wing, on April 13 and 14.

Taking about the seminar, Swaraj Thapa, one of the study forum members and principal advisor to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) on Monday said, “One of the objectives of conducting this seminar in Darjeeling is to make the political leaders and ministers in Delhi aware and give them a feel and experience of the popular Gorkhaland demand in its birth place”.

He further said, “Since our party president announced all movement for a separate state would be concentrated in Delhi, we have been meeting leaders and also staged dharnas, there. Now we want the Delhi leaders to come to the hills and see for themselves, the sentiments attached with the demand”.

To buttress its lobbying tactics, GJM has invited yoga guru Baba Ramdev, whose influence in Delhi is well known, to conduct a yoga camp for three days from April 17 to 19 in Darjeeling. Earlier, this year in January, Indresh Kumar, RSS’s central executive member also attended a cultural program organized by the GJM led council.

Through the two-day seminar the GJM aims at interaction and being a learning exercise on previous agitations for separate state in the country, GJM intends to utilize the experience to strengthen its movement. “Telangana and Uttarakhand are two states that were formed recently. We will have their MPs and leaders amidst us in the seminar. Through their speeches we intend to learn about how their movement bore fruit. We also want to know the hurdles we could face while taking our demand forward,” Thapa said.

The seminar which would be conducted in four segments would be documented and distributed to different political leaders and parties in Delhi. “The movement for the Gorkhaland demand has different dimensions. It is fought in the politically in the field and in the parliament and also intellectually,” said Thapa. GJM assistant secretary Binay Tamang appealed to the opposition parties in the Hills to attend the two day seminar for the sake of the statehood demand.

Besides Swami, the other speakers include TRS MPs Keshav Rao and Vinod Kumar, Kashi Singh Airi, who had first started the statehood movement in Uttarakhand, former Sikkim chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari, former union home secretary R.K.Singh and Assam MP from Tezpur R.K.Sarma.
