Gorkhaland would be achieved through negotiations with the Centre - Bimal Gurung

At the beginning of the tourist season, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration chief and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung has sent a message that Darjeeling and the Dooars are to be kept peaceful, sans protests, road blocks and rallies. Gorkhaland would be achieved through negotiations with the Centre.

On the fourth day of his visit to the Dooars, Bimal Gurung on Friday visited Neelkanth Mandir and Gorkha Bhavan in Chunabhatti before taking a tour of Chunabhatti village. He then headed towards Chamurchi Market and attended a meeting with residents from all the communities in the area.

Addressing the gathering, Gurung stressed that his primary objective before forming a new state was to spread a sense of brotherhood and peace among the people in the region. “There are a few people who do not like peace. As soon as Bimal Gurung visits Dooars the state government gets tense. But I am not fazed; I will now visit Dooars every month to spend five to six days and interact with the people,” he said.

The GTA chief further said there was no need for protests, road blocks and rallies to realise the “dream” of Gorkhaland, as fruitful talks were in progress with the Centre. “Dooars holds a special place in my heart and can’t even imagine leaving it aside. Many have laid their lives from the region for the Gorkhaland cause, while the region has been neglected by past and present governments. It is high time the region gets its due and is recognised for its glory, which is why it is difficult to even dream about Gorkhaland without Dooars,” Gurung stated.
