Here is a reaction from SKM leader TN Dhakal on Sikkim CM attending the Gorkha National Symposium... All we can do is shake our heads... slowly
"As per the materials posted in VOS, Mr. P.K Chamling, CM of Sikkim speaking at the Gorkha National Symposium event, Darjeeling said that we are all Gorkhas. With no offense to the Gorkha brothers and sisters from rest parts of the country I feel it is my duty to inform the Sikkimese people that we are not considered as Gorkhas by the Constitution of India.
We have been granted Indian Citizenship as Ethnic Nepalis, Bhutias and lepchas of Sikkimese origin. In no way we can be equated with the Gorkhas of rest parts of the country. We must understand that our citizenship itself will be at stake if we call ourselves Gorkhas.
Mr. Chamling might have come from Nepal, he knows better than anyone else. Our forefathers are born in Sikkim and we are Sikkimese first and Indians since 26/4/1975. GOI should give us justice by reserving Nepali seats in SLA under article 371F(f).
Mr Chamling's joining hands with Mr. Bimal Gurung in regard to tribal status to leftout communities ( Rai, Gurung, Mangar, Chettri, Bahun, Newar, Dewan, Jogi, Sannyasi, Thami, Sunuwar and Majhi of Sikkimese origin) is a total betrayal to Sikkimese people, this act of Mr. Chamling will only weaken our case in front of GOI. All efforts made so far for tribal status will be jeopardised.
The only way of getting tribal status to leftout communities is under the framework of article 371F of the Constitution of India just the way B/L of Sikkimese origin got their tribal status without any criterion laid down by GOI. Those Sikkimese who became Indians in 1975 by virtue of being Sikkim Subjects need not to qualify as per Article 332 of the Constitution.
If we want Tribal Status for the left out communities, Seats reserved in the SLA and security of Sikkim's future, It is high time that Sikkimese people should realise this and work hand in hand thinking above petty politics.
