GORKHALAND Dharna, DAY 1: IS THE GOVERNMENT SERIOUS ABOUT GORKHALAND?
Writes: Dinesh Sharma
A massive nation-wide protest demanding Gorkhaland statehood and seeking central intervention kick started at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi today. More than 5000 people from Darjeeling, Dooars and other parts of India joined the protest led by Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) Chief Executive and National President of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Shri Bimal Gurung.
Today was the first day of the 3 days peaceful Dharna for Gorkhaland. Today’s protest was preceded by a week-long sit-in protest by GJM Women Group, since the 9th of November.
Extending his support for Gorkhaland statehood, Shri Biswajit Daimary, Rajya Sabha MP and leader of Bodoland People’s Front said called upon the Government to look into the aspirations of the Gorkha community on priority. Saying that Kolkata has failed to listen to the cries of the Gorkha community, the central government must urgently intervene and address the severe Identity issue of the Gorkhas.
Addressing the massive gathering, Biswajit Daimary questioned if the BJP government at the centre is really sincere about Gorkhaland & other similar demands for smaller states. If the government is serious about the aspirations of such smaller communities, it must constitute a state reorganisation committee to look into the grievances and aspirations of the people without any delay.
Shri Bimal Gurung in his address reminded the government that Gorkhaland is a 108 years old demanding a separate state for Gorkha within the constitutional framework of India. While calling for youth and entire Gorkha community to support the Gorkhaland cause, he said that the cause is the aspiration and identity of the entire Gorkha population in India. Besides the identity of the community, Gorkhaland is also an issue of national security because the region is the chicken neck that connects the North East with the rest of India. Shri Bimal Gurung left the dharna early as he had a meeting scheduled with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to discuss the Gorkhaland statehood demand.
Vikash Basnet, ADC member from Manipur along with a delegation attended the Dharna. While joining the chorus for Gorkhaland, he spoke of how the Gorkhaland issue is important to reassert the Indian Gorkha identity and a guardian state for small Gorkha communities spread across the country. The Gorkhaland state will be a constitutional guarantee of the Gorkha community and a fitting recognition of the sacrifices made by the Gorkhas in building the nation, India.
Various speakers, organizations, and GTA executives also delivered their speeches amongst loud chants and #Gorkhaland sloganeering the massive gathering. Delegation from Arunachal Pradesh Gorkha Welfare Society, representatives from Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other places joined and extended support for Gorkhaland demand.
