Hon'ble Amit Shah Ji

I am writing to you with grave anguish and hurt felt by the Gorkhali community across India. We are deeply saddened by the outrageous statement made by Mr. Chandra Kumar Bose who is more than likely to become the face of BJP in West Bengal.

In an interview to Catch News, Mr. Bose is quoted as having said that “I believe slogans like Bharat ki barbaadi or Gorkhaland should be treated as an attack on the integrity of India. I can't say whether its sedition or not but its definitely an attack on India and steps should be taken to curb it.”

This statement of his comes as an insult to all the Gorkhali freedom fighters and the past and current Indian Gorkhali soldiers who are valiantly defending India against all the inimical forces including countries like Pakistan and China. This statement of his is also an insult to all the Indian Gorkhalis who have shed their blood and sweat in our attempts to make India – the greatest nation on earth. This statement also indicates why the Gorkhas need a state of our own – Gorkhaland, as it is apparent for mainstream Bengali politicians we are still seen as outsiders who are demanding for separation from India.

What is most hurtful to the Gorkha sentiment is the fact that one of the most recognizable faces in Bengal BJP Mr. Chandra Bose doesn’t seem to be aware of the fact that Gorkhaland is a demand for a separate state within the geographical and political contours of India. The government under Shri. Atal Bajpayee ji formed three new states in 2000, and even UPA government formed Telangana in 2013, if these new states do not, and have not posed a threat to the integrity of India, then why does Mr. Bose assume or proclaim that ‘Gorkhaland will pose a threat to the integrity of India?’

Perhaps Mr. Bose is unaware of the fact that there were only 15 states when India earned our independence and today we have 29 states, and people in Gorkhaland region are hoping that ours will be the 30th state.

His assertion that demanding Gorkhaland is equivalent to some anti-National shouting “Bharat ki barbadi tak” not only reeks of ignorance on his part, but also puts a question mark on the brave Gorkha soldiers who are defending our motherland as we speak.

Does Mr. Bose know, think or assume that the same Gorkha brave-hearts who are putting their lives on the line from Siachen to Kanyakumari, from the desserts of Thar to the mountain peaks of Arunachal Pradesh would put the national integrity of India at risk?

Sir, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has been an alliance partner with NDA since 2008 and while the rest of Bengal sided with communists or TMC, the people in Darjeeling hills have elected BJP Member of Parliaments twice in a row, with full trust in Your and Modi ji’s leadership, and to see that someone who joined BJP a month ago can vilify the Gorkhas so casually and with such impunity is troublesome.

On behalf of the Gorkhas of Darjeeling region, Assam and Sikkim and the rest of India, I urge you to implore upon Mr. Bose to issue an apology to the Indian Gorkha community. Given the gravity of the situation, we are hopeful that you will encourage Mr. Bose to issue an apology at the earliest.

Kindest regards

Bimal Gurung
