TMC supporter who had called Jai Shree Ram a ‘call of terror’ now calls Gorkhas ‘infiltrators’ on national TV

While opposing implementation of National Register of Citizens in the state of West Bengal, political analyst and TMC supporter Tanvi Das ended up terming the Gorkhas as ‘infiltrators’ during a panel discussion on a TV channel.
While addressing a rally in Kolkata on October 1, Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the government will implement NRC in West Bengal. He had said that before implementing NRC, the centre will pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill first so that people who should get Indian Citizenship will get it. Amit Shah had alleged that Mamata Banerjee is spreading a lie that millions of Hindus will have to leave West Bengal if NRC is implemented. He said that people of Bengal were misled on NRC, and he wanted to clarify and clear all doubts.
TMC supporter who had called Jai Shree Ram a ‘call of terror’ now calls Gorkhas ‘infiltrators’ on national TV

In the backdrop of Amit Shah’s remarks, News channel TV9 Bharatvarsh had hosted a panel discussion on the issue on 1stOctober. Political anylist Tanvi Das present in the panel on behalf of TMC, who rejected the claims made by Amit Shah and strongly opposed the NRC in Bengal.
During the heated debate on NRC and CAB, Tanvi Das made a shocking statement saying that Gorkhas are also illegal infiltrators, and questioned BJP spokesperson R P Singh for supporting the Gorkhas. “Gorkhas are also illegal infiltrators. Deport the Gorkhas, why are you supporting the Gorkhaland”, the TMC supporter said during the debate. She said that Gorkhas entered India by crossing the border illegally.
It is interesting to note that nobody in the panel reacted to the Tanvi’s comment, as they were involved in a heated argument over NRC, and probably didn’t hear what she was saying. The anchor Samir Abbas also didn’t react to the same.
The comment of Tanvi Das is totally wrong, because Gorkhas are not illegal immigrants in India. Gorkhas are living in several states of India for several decades, before the independence of India. They are known as India Gorkhas, as opposed to Nepalese Gorkhas, and after the independence of India, they were granted citizenship by a gazette notification of government of India.
Moreover, even the Gorkhas that entered India after that can’t be deported as they are protected by the Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed in 1950. This treaty provides citizens of one country same privileges in terms of residence, property, trade and commerce, movement etc in the other country on a reciprocal basis.

Chandra Bose's 'Gorkhaland is anti-national' remark reflects BJP's hypocrisy - Anmol Prasad

11:38 AM
JAP
Writes: Anmole Prasad

If by some miracle, wrought by the concerted efforts of a thousand godmen at a yagya burning off several tons of ghee, the BJP manages to pull off a victory in West Bengal, then it is a sobering thought that Chandra Kumar Bose, grandson of Subhash Chandra Bose, might become West Bengal's next boss. Especially sobering for the people of Darjeeling and the Dooars.

Bose is the tip of the BJP spear in the forthcoming West Bengal assembly elections - he has been anointed to contest from the Bhowanipore seat against no less than the formidable Mamata Banerjee herself. If he manages this unlikely feat, there is little doubt that he will become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. Bose is both a Darwinian and an optimist. According to a recent interview given to Catch, he believes that the BJP will evolve into a secular party that maintains communal harmony across the country.

Alao Read

What makes Bose particularly interesting is that he makes no bones about his views on Gorkhaland. When asked by the same interviewer what he thought about slapping sedition charges on students, Bose replied: "...I think there should be a review of the sedition law and the all other laws from the British era. Having said that, I believe slogans like Bharat ki barbaadi or Gorkhaland should be treated as an attack on the integrity of India..."

Left Chandra Bose, right Anmol Prasad
Red in the face [though by no means in outlook] the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, NDA's self-proclaimed junior partner in Darjeeling, went into damage control, penning a strongly worded letter to the BJP president urging him to implore upon Bose to issue an apology to the Indian Gorkha community for vilifying the Gorkhas. It will be interesting to see whether the BJP will make Bose comply with the demand. As it stands however, Bose has made it clear that sloganmongers shouting either Bharat ki Barbadi or Gorkhaland stand on the same footing and must be dealt with sternly.

GJM's Failure
Meanwhile, local politics in Darjeeling has become a confusing whirl, a merry-go-round with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) offering to support the GJM who, whilst coyly dallying with this offer from the Left, are themselves waiting for support from the BJP. On the other hand, the BJP itself has been charged by the GJM with the unenviable task of extracting an apology from the BJP's star candidate in the West Bengal assembly elections for his comments on Gorkhaland. Or more correctly, to quote loosely from the letter sent by GJM Supremo Bimal Gurung: Amit Shah, president of the BJP is urged to implore upon Bose to issue an apology to the Indian Gorkha community. Whether the BJP will implore or not remains to be seen.

What turns on this? Nothing much, really. The insincerity of the BJP towards the demand for a separate state was already palpable in its casual reference in the 2009 and 2014 manifestos, promising merely to "sympathetically examine the long pending demands of the Gorkhas, the Adivasis and other people of Darjeeling district and Dooars region." Even more casual was the conduct of its successive MPs from Darjeeling who, having mopped up a massive mandate on the sentiments of their voters, trotted off to New Delhi to bleat in Parliament about how "these people in Darjeeling" deserved better roads and drinking water.

When the BJP returned their massive victory in 2014, it seemed that the constellations could not have been better placed for the Gorkhaland demand. All that the GJM needed to do - or so it appeared - was to make a quick stab for the summit. The BJP had neither stakes nor any aspirations in West Bengal. Their newly formed government at the Centre took no prisoners, and did not require the support of any party from Bengal.

Had the Bill for the creation of a separate state of Darjeeling and the Dooars been placed in Parliament, their mandate in the Lower House would have passed the Bill with a deafening clang. The Upper House would have required some work but some nimble lobbying on the part of the Darjeeling leaders might have done it.

So why didn't it happen? Sincerity of purpose - or the lack of it - is merely one of many reasons. It is now clear that there was, nor will there ever be any political will within the BJP to grant statehood to Darjeeling and the Dooars. Within days of coming into contact with the GJM, the BJP bosses quickly realised that they had a pliable, unwitting ally in their hands, one that enjoyed an absolute sway over an emotional, starry-eyed populace at that. And the BJP was quick to exploit the opportunity.

MPs Who Did Nothing
The GJMM itself, unsuccessful in finding support from any other quarter in New Delhi, was only too eager to outsource its lone representative's seat in Parliament in exchange for patronage from the BJP. Their supporters, heavily invested in the belief that Gorkhaland was just around the corner, had no real say in the matter really. And thus for two consecutive terms, the Darjeeling voters elected a Member of Parliament who had no clue about the needs and aspirations of their 'people'.

Having secured a seat in Parliament cheaply in exchange for a flimsy, sloppily-worded assurance the BJP lost no time in reducing the GJM to the level of abject subservience. The same party that ushered in the arrival of the Hindu Right in the Darjeeling hills was relegated to the bottom of the heap in its own territory. Two consecutive Members of Parliament Jaswant Singh and SS. Ahluwalia were remarkable for their absence, spending more time in the corridors of the capital than in the constituency.

Like comets they would appear from time to time only to dole out what remained of their MP funds in order to staunch any criticism. Slowly but surely the GJMM lost the advantage to the BJP, finding it harder and harder to even get an appointment or audience with their own MPs. And about the way they were treated in New Delhi by their own Parliamentary representatives, the less said the better.
Years of getting away with it has inured national parties in their dealings with Darjeeling. And the blame lies squarely with our own leaders. With dreary regularity, they would ferry a virtual stranger from New Delhi, introduce him to the voters as their Great Liberator, one who would guarantee Instant Gorkhaland, and thereafter compel people to support him as their representative in Parliament.
Once the victory celebrations were over, these gentlemen of fortune would then depart for the capital, never to return for a second term. On the rare appearances they made, the local party would grovel and cringe, ushering them as chief guests from one tamasha to another. Nobody had any idea of what they did in New Delhi and at any rate, precious little information trickled back.

And so hardly anyone in Darjeeling was aware of the fact that in the early nineties, Inderjit Khuller, the MP who surfed the wave of popular support and won the Darjeeling MP's seat with the help of the GNLF, even had the audacity to oppose the Nepali language Bill in Parliament, terming it a "foreign language".

Back to Netaji's grandson, allowing for his abysmal information levels, it would still be hard for anyone to imagine that Chandra Kumar Bose didn't have any idea what Gorkhaland stood for. That Article 3 of the Indian Constitution actually permitted it. That topography, ecology, language and economic logic made it an obvious choice for these fragile Himalayas. But the Gorkhaland agitation has in more than one account been misconstrued by lazy writers as a 'conflict' or a 'separatist' movement.

Caught between the extreme insurgencies of the North-East and the complex mass politics of the mainland, Darjeeling's separate state movement has foundered in a series of crises - a crisis of leadership, a crisis of ideas and a crisis of means. Its feudal protagonists, oblivious of the suspicion and indifference with which the people of the region are perceived by the Indian Union, oblivious of national security and of national ignorance, found themselves alternately preening and posturing as Guevara-style guerillas one the one hand and as neo-Gandhians on the other. Nationalistic rhetoric was raised to a fever pitch but paradoxically parading the culture of neighbouring Nepal to emphasise one's Indianness.

The Indian identity of Gorkha was strangely referenced the name of a district in the same Nepal from which we sought to distance our citizenship. The feeble threats to 'internationalise' the issue by raising bogus claims of Kalimpong being a part of Bhutanese territory, or threats of writing to the United Nations or the Hague have nothing to further our cause. The unipolar plank of identity politics, ignoring other critical social, political and economic issues, has convinced no one and leaves New Delhi cold.

Unless newer - and less pretentious - methods of taking it forward are soon evolved, the movement for a separate state is liable to run aground - especially if our power-crazed Captain, having thrown both compass and sextant overboard, continues to insist on manning the rudder all by himself. Time perhaps, to prise his hands gently off the wheel and lead him below?

Bimal Gurung Condemns Chandra Kumar Bose's "Gorkhaland" Statement - Writes to Amit Shah

3:26 PM
GJM Chief Bimal Gurung Condemns Chandra Kumar Bose's "Gorkhaland" Statement - Writes to Amit Shah

GJM Chief Bimal Gurung has taking a strong exception to the idiotic comment made by Newly nominated BJP candidate from Jadavpur University, Mr. Chandra Kr Bose's statement equating the Gorkhaland demand with anti-National statements made in JNU.

Here is the full text of his letter

Hon'ble Amit Shah Ji

I am writing to you with grave anguish and hurt felt by the Gorkhali community across India. We are deeply saddened by the outrageous statement made by Mr. Chandra Kumar Bose who is more than likely to become the face of BJP in West Bengal.

In an interview to Catch News, Mr. Bose is quoted as having said that “I believe slogans like Bharat ki barbaadi or Gorkhaland should be treated as an attack on the integrity of India. I can't say whether its sedition or not but its definitely an attack on India and steps should be taken to curb it.”

http://www.catchnews.com/…/west-bengal-has-seen-cong-left-a…

This statement of his comes as an insult to all the Gorkhali freedom fighters and the past and current Indian Gorkhali soldiers who are valiantly defending India against all the inimical forces including countries like Pakistan and China. This statement of his is also an insult to all the Indian Gorkhalis who have shed their blood and sweat in our attempts to make India – the greatest nation on earth. This statement also indicates why the Gorkhas need a state of our own – Gorkhaland, as it is apparent for mainstream Bengali politicians we are still seen as outsiders who are demanding for separation from India.

What is most hurtful to the Gorkha sentiment is the fact that one of the most recognizable faces in Bengal BJP Mr. Chandra Bose doesn’t seem to be aware of the fact that Gorkhaland is a demand for a separate state within the geographical and political contours of India. The government under Shri. Atal Bajpayee ji formed three new states in 2000, and even UPA government formed Telangana in 2013, if these new states do not, and have not posed a threat to the integrity of India, then why does Mr. Bose assume or proclaim that ‘Gorkhaland will pose a threat to the integrity of India?’

Perhaps Mr. Bose is unaware of the fact that there were only 15 states when India earned our independence and today we have 29 states, and people in Gorkhaland region are hoping that ours will be the 30th state.

His assertion that demanding Gorkhaland is equivalent to some anti-National shouting “Bharat ki barbadi tak” not only reeks of ignorance on his part, but also puts a question mark on the brave Gorkha soldiers who are defending our motherland as we speak.

Does Mr. Bose know, think or assume that the same Gorkha brave-hearts who are putting their lives on the line from Siachen to Kanyakumari, from the desserts of Thar to the mountain peaks of Arunachal Pradesh would put the national integrity of India at risk?

Sir, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has been an alliance partner with NDA since 2008 and while the rest of Bengal sided with communists or TMC, the people in Darjeeling hills have elected BJP Member of Parliaments twice in a row, with full trust in Your and Modi ji’s leadership, and to see that someone who joined BJP a month ago can vilify the Gorkhas so casually and with such impunity is troublesome.

On behalf of the Gorkhas of Darjeeling region, Assam and Sikkim and the rest of India, I urge you to implore upon Mr. Bose to issue an apology to the Indian Gorkha community. Given the gravity of the situation, we are hopeful that you will encourage Mr. Bose to issue an apology at the earliest.

Kindest regards

Bimal Gurung

"I am not anti-Gorkhaland" - says TMC candidate Shanta Chettri

9:47 AM
TMC
"I am not anti-Gorkhaland... I have raised the demand for Gorkhaland in Bengal legislative assembly... there is a record of that, anyone can verify.... I was labelled as anti-Gorkhaland while I was still an MLA... they burned down my house... and they made my life difficult... but I didn't give up... I am here to serve my people..." with these phrases TMC candidate from Kurseong constituency Ms. Shanta Chettri tried to find an emotional connect with the people in Mirik.

Addressing a press conference, Ms. Chettri stated that, "I am contesting this election for good governance, development and people under the able leadership of Ms. Mamata Banerjee... unlike those who preach Gorkhaland, and yet haven't done one thing to achieve it and are running the hills in a dictatorial fashion... I am commited to ushering in development in our region..."

Chandra Kumar Bose - Gorkhaland an attack on the integrity of India

9:06 AM
Writes Sanjog Chamling

MORON ALERT: "I believe slogans like Bharat ki barbaadi or Gorkhaland should be treated as an attack on the integrity of India." - Chandra Kumar Bose. Chandra Kumar Bose is apparently the BJP face of Bengal who is contesting against Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming assembly election

Mr. Chandra Kumar Bose whose only claim to fame is that he happens to be the grand-nephew of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose is contesting against Mamata Banerjee on a BJP ticket this up coming election. He thinks that chanting "We want Gorkhaland" is equivalent to chanting "Bharat ko Barbaadi slogans..."

Responding to an interview question carried on Catch News, he says, "I believe slogans like Bharat ki barbaadi or Gorkhaland should be treated as an attack on the integrity of India. I can't say whether its sedition or not but its definitely an attack on India and steps should be taken to curb it."

Following is what he said on his conversation with Catch:

SD: Does guiding mean slapping sedition charge on students? Do you support that?

CB: Well this is a legal issue and I am not an expert. But this is a British law and I think there should be a review of the sedition law and the all other laws from the British era. Having said that, I believe slogans like Bharat ki barbaadi or Gorkhaland should be treated as an attack on the integrity of India. I can't say whether its sedition or not but its definitely an attack on India and steps should be taken to curb it. [Details here]

Chandra Kumar Bose - Gorkhaland an attack on the integrity of India
Chandra Kumar Bose
We hope that GJM will strongly protest against this false and completely moronic insinuation with BJP bosses and force idiotic Mr. Chandra to issue an apology.

 Let the MORONS know.

1.The site, declassifying 100 files relating to Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, opened, with the song "Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja.. Khushi K Geet Gaaye Jaa..." by one of the Gorkhali stelwart - Capt. Ram Singh Thakuri. [Details here]

2.Krishna Bahdur Mukhia May 12, 1921 to September 13, 2012 was one of the bravest Indian Gorkha freedom fighters. He was the personal bodyguard and driver of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, during his warring days in the jungles of Burma in 1943.[Details here]

3.Netaji had cherished Capt. Thakuri and his music and it is evident from the fact that Netji had gifted Capt. Thakuri a violin and a saxophone as gifts.  Krishna[Details here]

4.A great Indian  Gorkha Freedom fighter Saheed Durga Malla who was hanged to death by the British on 25th August 1944 for his patriotic activities fighting along side Netaji. [Detail here]

5.Saheed Indreni Thapa and Saheed Sabitri Thapa were teenagers when they joined the ‘Bal Sena’ or ‘Janbaz Dal’of the Indian National Army led by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. Indreni Thapa and Sabitri Thapa, the two Gorkha teenagers of ‘Janbaz Dal’ attained martyrdom by blowing up British tanks. They did this by virtually making themselves human bombs by strapping mines on their bodies and crawling under the British tanks camouflaged as bushes, and blowing up the British tanks.
Reportedly Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was the eye-witness to this act of supreme sacrifice by our brave hearts. [Details here]

We strongly condemn this act by Chandra Kumar Bose and request him to go through the history of the Indian Gorkhas before making such baseless statement. He surely needs to go through the Constitution of India to know that Gorkhaland is more than 100 years old demand of the people which is well within the framework of our Constitution. [Details here].

We seek an apology from Chandra Kumar Bose as he relates Bharat ki barbaadi with Gorkhaland.

"BJP Does Not Support ‪Gorkhaland‬ Demand" - Rahul Sinha former ‎Bengal‬ BJP president

12:25 PM
Former state BJP president Rahul Sinha yesterday told a rally here in Darjeeling, that his party did not support the call for a Gorkhaland state, a long-standing demand of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha that supported the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in the Darjeeling seat.

Referring to the statehood demand, Sinha, a national secretary of the BJP, told a modest gathering at Chowk Bazar: "There is this politics of separation in the hills. How can brothers be separated from brothers? We will never allow this separation."

Later, he told a section of the media: "We want to make it clear that we do not support the demand for Gorkhaland. We did not support it in the past, we are not supporting it now and we will not support it in the future. The issue in Darjeeling is about development."

The Morcha, none of whose leaders attended the BJP rally despite being invited, dubbed Sinha's comments as his "personal statements". Morcha leader Roshan Giri, who is in Delhi along with party chief Bimal Gurung to participate in a three-day dharna for Gorkhaland, said: "That is his (Sinha's) personal statement. The BJP's central leadership is supportive of the demand."

The Morcha officially said most top leaders were in Delhi, so none from the party could attend the rally. Sources in the hill party, however, said on condition of anonymity said that the Morcha stayed away from the meeting because it was aware of Sinha's views on the statehood demand.
"BJP Does Not Support ‪Gorkhaland‬ Demand" - Rahul Sinha former ‎Bengal‬ BJP president
"BJP Does Not Support ‪Gorkhaland‬ Demand"
 - Rahul Sinha former ‎Bengal‬ BJP president
Sinha's comments are in sharp contrast to the stand of the BJP's Darjeeling MP, S.S. Ahluwalia, who has openly supported the Gorkhaland demand and said the Centre would work towards its formation.

The central leadership of the BJP, however, has never directly supported the Gorkhaland demand. The party's manifesto for the 2014 polls mentioned that the BJP would "appropriately consider and sympathetically examine the long-pending problems of the Gorkhas".

Bengal BJP leaders today said if the state leadership supported the Gorkhaland demand, it would amount to committing "political suicide" as it would alienate the party from the rest of the state. Other than political outfits in the hills, all other parties have opposed the statehood demand.

A Bengal BJP leader said: "How can a state party leader support the separation of Bengal? It would amount to committing political suicide. Even the central leadership has not committed itself to Gorkhaland and merely said it would sympathetically examine the problems of the Gorkhas."

Another BJP leader said Ahluwalia was not as "diplomatic" as Jawant Singh, the BJP's former Darjeeling MP who too had got the Morcha's support. "We should not take everything Ahluwalia says very seriously."

Speaking to The Telegraph this evening, Sinha tried to explain the reasons behind his comment on the Gorkhaland issue. "Lack of development in the area, both under the Left and the Trinamul regimes, is the main reason behind the demand for a separate state. So, development is needed more than a separate state. Whatever I said was in the interest of the state and this has been the stand of the party."

Told that Ahluwalia had supported the Morcha demand, Sinha said: "Ahluwalia is not the party.... It is true that the BJP and the Morcha fought the elections together. We have an understanding with them on all issues except this one and there is nothing wrong in having differences over one or two issues."

Mamata Banerjee force GJM resume Gorkhaland agitation to consolidate votes - Ahluwalia

11:17 AM
Siliguri, Sept. 28: Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia today said the chief minister Mamata Banerjee made a tactical move to force the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to resume its statehood agitation before the Assembly polls with an intention to make it a campaign issue and consolidate anti-Gorkhaland votes.

Ahluwalia, who is campaigning for BJP candidates for the three-tier Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad polls, said: "The manner in which the chief minister is meddling in the affairs of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration is part of a tactical plan by her party. The idea is to create such circumstances in the GTA that the Morcha leaders are left with the only option, to resume the movement for a separate state."

He added: "There has been peace and amity in the hills for the past few years. But now, the chief minister and her party want the movement to resume so that they can refer to the agitation in their campaign before the Assembly polls, reiterate that Trinamul was against division of Bengal and attempt to consolidate the anti-Gorkhaland votes ."
 Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia
Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia
The MP's statement came a couple of days after Morcha chief Bimal Gurung's comment that the chief minister was forcing them to resume the Gorkhaland movement.

Ahluwalia said today: "First of all, the chief minister and her party conceded Morcha's demand and signed the (GTA) accord where it was mentioned that the Morcha was not dropping the demand of Gorkhaland. Secondly, although the autonomous body was formed, transfer of departments to the GTA remained only on paper."

The MP added: "Thirdly, no funds were provided by the state to the GTA and it kept dilly-dallying on the issue of transfer of departments and allocation of funds. It also bypassed the GTA and took up some development projects on its own. All these are enough indications to prove that Trinamul always wanted to push the Morcha to a corner, which would prompt the party to think of reviving the movement."

The MP who was at a meeting between GTA representatives and Union home minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi recently, said: "The GTA representatives narrated the problems (to Singh) in detail. They have also sought the Centre's intervention and a tripartite meeting. Let me clarify, the BJP will not let Trinamul succeed."

Reacting to Ahluwalia's assertions, Binny Sharma, general secretary and spokesperson for Trinamul (hill) committee, said: "It is the BJP which is trying to make the hills unstable. The BJP leaders always have double standards and speak differently in the plains and the hills on the Gorkhaland issue. Our party supremo and chief minister has said we are against division of state."

Congress demands cases withdrawn against anti Gorkhaland tribal leaders

12:29 PM
Siliguri, Aug. 26: A Congress MLA from the tea belt today demanded that the Mamata Banerjee government withdraw cases against tribal leaders who had protested the formation of Gorkhaland and the inclusion of Terai and Dooars in it.

Yesterday, the chief minister had said in Darjeeling that 115 cases against Gorkhaland leaders would be withdrawn. Joseph Munda, the Congress MLA from Jalpaiguri's Nagrakata, said the same should be done for the other side that tried to block the formation of Gorkhaland.

With the elections to Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad round the bend and the Assembly elections scheduled next year, Munda's demand has given Trinamul a campaign weapon, if the state accepts the Congress MLA's demand.

At the meeting of the Tribal Advisory Council in Darjeeling today, Munda demanded that all cases filed against tribals for blocking highways during the anti-Gorkhaland movement be withdrawn. "I have proposed that similar cases of blockade, which were registered against tribals in Terai and Dooars between 2008 and 2011, should be withdrawn," Munda said. "The chief minister has assured me she would look into the issue."
