2:54 PM

Black Day when democracy was crushed by West Bengal

On 9th April, 2008 ex-servicemen who had been marching peacefully in support of our right to have a state of our own - Gorkhaland, were brutalized by the West Bengal police at Darjeeling More. The inhuman treatment and humiliation meted out to our ex-servicemen by West Bengal government and it police will not be forgotten by Gorkhas living across the world. We condemn the brutality meted out then, and also the brutality unleashed now.

These same soldiers who risked their lives to protect our motherland, many of whom have been martyred protecting her sovereignty, were humiliated in the streets of Siliguri. They were brutally beaten up, their medals bloodied by the West Bengal police for demanding our constitutional right to have a state of our own. In dishonouring the Gorkha soldiers, West Bengal police insulted all the soldiers who have served our mother land.

In Bengal, us Gorkhas, the ghoti Bengalis, and all the indigenous communities are not safe. Only Rohingyas and illegal Bangladeshis are. The same tiger that seeks to devour me today, will be waiting to make you its prey tomorrow.  Therefore, I request everyone to remain mindful, alert and conscious.

Once again, I assure you all that the sacrifices made by our ex-servicemen won't go in vain, it may take us time, but Gorkhaland will be formed.

Jai Gorkha, Jai Bharat

Gorkha ex-servicemen back in action in Nepal Earthquake mission

9:48 AM
As many as 1.25 lakh ex-servicemen from the Gorkha regiments of the Army, who are back in Nepal, have now been roped in for rescue operations. “We have contacted all the ex-servicemen from the Gorkha regiments,” a Defence Ministry spokesperson said. Army Chief General Dalbir Singh, from the Gurkha Rifles regiment, is the Honorary Chief of the Nepalese Army.

As Kathmandu continues to reel under aftershocks, the Indian Army has turned to its Gorkha network of serving and retired soldiers hailing from Nepal for better coordination of rescue and relief operations.

The Army, which has 39 battalions and seven Gorkha regiments comprising 38,000 troops, plans to use this network of serving soldiers backed by 1.25 lakh pensioners in Nepal to ensure relief reaches the right quarters.

Military officials are also planning to incorporate Gorkha troops in rescue and relief teams that will be sent out to Nepal. "It will help in utilising the local knowledge and language skills in assisting even the relief teams of NDRF, that have already been deployed to Nepal," said a senior official from the Gorkha Regiment.

The Army has already despatched to Kathmandu Major General Sandhu, a Gorkha officer, who will coordinate rescue and relief operations as the task force commander.

The task force will include troops from NDRF, the Indian Army and the Nepalese army.

All Gorkha units have already sent out small groups of troops that had families in Nepal and will continue to grant leaves to troops in batches.

Gorkhas in Uttarakhand demand recognition as a tribal group

9:20 PM
DEHRADUN: The over 12 lakh Gorkhas in Uttarakhand demand recognition as a tribal group. The demand grew even more strident after Gorkhas in West Bengal and Sikkim were reportedly to be granted tribal status.

There are at least 15 groups of Gorkhas -- Bhujel, Gurung, Mangar, Newar, Jogi, Khas, Rai, Sunuwar, Thami and Yakhna, among them - that at present are not considered tribal groups. Groups like Bhutia and Letcha have been already been granted tribal status. Tamang and Limboo communities were recognised as tribals in 2003.

President of the All India Gorkha Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association (AIGEWA), West Bengal region, SP Pradhan, said tribal status would make for easier access to higher education and jobs for young people from the community.

In Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Punjab, Sikkim, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, Gorkhas are listed as an Other Backward Caste (OBC) group.

Given that retirement from the army happens at an early age of 35, Gorkha ex-servicemen should be offered re-employment opportunities too, members at the AIGEWA meeting said. They have also sought that the budget allocated by the Centre for Gorkhas, which is a mere Rs 8 lakh per annum, should be increased.
