Assam Gorkha Chandra Sharma awaits clearance to fly self made helicopter

11:53 PM
Assam mechanic builds ‘jugaad’ helicopter, awaits clearance

Writes Rahul Karmakar

Vehicles struggle to reach Shyamjuli, a village 450km northeast of Assam’s principal city, Guwahati. This was the reason why Chandra Siwakoti Sharma, a school dropout, built a helicopter that he says can carry two people 30-50ft above the ground.

An automobile mechanic, Sharma spent more than Rs15 lakh to design the helicopter with metal sheets, car seats and two SUV engines. He has named it Pawan Putra, a sort of a “jugaad”, or innovative fix, he worked on primarily to give his backward area a faster mode of communication.

Shyamjuli is in Dhemaji district, Assam’s remotest and almost always flood-affected.
“My helicopter can fly, though not as fast as the ones in operation for civil or military duty. It can easily move at 50kmph,” Sharma says.

He is awaiting clearance from authorities concerned to find out if his aircraft really works.

“We want to encourage a person who has conquered adversities to make a helicopter without any degree in aviation. But we want to go by the rules first,” said Victor Carpenter, the district’s deputy commissioner.

Carpenter said the district administration would write to the chief of civil aviation regulator DGCA and others who deal with such cases. “We are exploring the possibility of at least facilitating a trial for the chopper that Sharma has built.”

Locals, enthused by Sharma’s innovation, have already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One of them, Ganesh Karki, pointed out that the helicopter was one of the best examples of Modi’s ambitious “Make in India” project.

“Sharma could not study beyond class 3 because of poverty, but invested all his savings and even sold his land to follow his dream. He needs to be encouraged,” Karki wrote.
Sharma said local officials and officers from an army camp nearby have promised to witness the trial of his helicopter once he gets permission.

“I did run the engines once. The rotor was forcing the helicopter up, but I stopped the engines in order to not violate any rules,” he said.

Protesting against the gruesome killing of 13 innocent villagers and injuring severely several others by suspected Arunachali miscreants along the Assam-Arunachal Border at Chawuldhuwa village under Behali Reserve Forest of Sonitpur District of Assam last week AAGSU staged Highway blockade. Insurgents had killed Himan Subba, Prabhat Subba,Bhalu Subba, Tamrukhel Subba, Ganesh Newar, Rupsang Munda, Moneswar Brahma and 6 others and injured several others.

Nanda Kirati Dewan, publicity secretary AAGSU said that ‘AAGSU District Units of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat and Karbianglong completely jammed the National Highway 37 leading to Arunachal Pradesh in various places of the districts. Several District and Regional Units of AAGSU through out Assam also joined the road and economic blockade program.

A common memorandum through the respective Deputy Commissioners of the districts were sent to the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi demanding immediate justice to the innocent villagers who were killed in the incident and compensate with adequate compensation not less than 25 lakhs for the deceased and 5 lakhs to the injured for their medical treatment.
The memorandum also sought immediate intervention in settling the intrastate border dispute with Assam of the adjoining states Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya and provide security to borderside and reserve forests dwellers and who have been prone to illegal encroachers and antisocial elements.’ Dewan further criticized the Govt. of Assam for failing to provide security and justice after the incident.

‘The AAGSU strongly objects Union Jt. Secretary Home for NE Sambhu Singh denial in proving paramilitary forces for Behali Reserve Forest area where such a gruesome killing had taken place and fear of such attacks cannot be denied till date. There is an immediate need to set up permanent police out posts and call on paramilitary forces to for see security angles till issues are settled’, Nanda Kirati Dewan the AAGSU publicity secretary further said alleging State and Union Government have taken the issue lightly though they assume third party involvement and the Chief Minister have directed for a CBI enquiry.

AAGSU president Udoy Singh Limboo from Makum in Tinsukia from a road blockade program said, ’ We issue an ultimatum of three more days to book the culprits and perpetuators of this gruesome attack and ensure safety and security of the natives immediately and announce compensation as demanded otherwise the AAGSU along with all community organization and civil society organisations will call indefinite economic blockade along Assam-Arnachal Pradesh border throughout Assam demanding justice and resolving all the border disputes. He added besides upper Assam blockades are being held at Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Nagoan, Morigoan, Kamrup, Goalpara and BTC region expect Barak valley.

Limboo lambasting Home Dept. i/c Minister CM Tarun Gogoi for delay in CBI enquiry and lawlessness in the state said, ‘ Mere ordering an enquiry is not sufficient, we want actions not words, we have heard enough from the CM. When lives are lost, politics cannot be a CM’s priority. AAGSU requests CM to immediately address all the demands mentioned in memorandum that is being sent from several district headquarters today following the road and economic blockade.’

AAGSU advisor Dil Bahadur Limboo has appealed its All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAGSU) counterparts to see it protest against the Governments who have kept border issue alive for their political gain and requested the people of Arunachal not to retaliate against Gorkha population of Arunachal Pradesh.

Rumours of Gorkha people butchering and harassing Arunachal people have been surfacing following our protest since the incident took place and we are equally concern. AAGSU’s protest is not against Arunachal Pradesh or its people its against the governments who have not responded to people’s voice, Limboo added.

Gorkhas of Assam demand 500 posts for Nepali teachers

7:12 PM
GUWAHATI, December 28: The Akhil Assam Gorkha Sammelan today submitted a memorandum to the Mission Director of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan indicating some persistent problems faced by the Gorkha community.General Secretary of the assoviation Gangaram Dhakal said, “The advertisement floated recently for the posts of medium teachers dated 11.12.2013 by Empowered Committee on Elementary TET, Government of Assam has put us in dire strait as because we know that only regular posts to be filed up by the Government Should go through TET only. As such medium teachers posts advertised by  will benefit only Six persons as only three Nepali Medium schools are running throughout Assam presently which are in very deplorable conditions due to lack of teacher, books and infrastructures.”

“The Gorkhas of Assam have been focusing on the longstanding demand of M.I.L (Nepali teachers) since inception by various apex bodies of Gorkha Community. Accordingly the Government was very considerate and gracious to provide 200, 100 in 1993 and 100 in 2001 for Nepali M.I.L teachers. But due to non–confirmation of Nepali (M.I.L) posts, these posts have been confirmed and regularized in other categories. And thereby the Gorkhas were deprived of their rights.” He further added.

The Gorkha body has further demanded 1500 posts for M.I.L teachers all over Assam where more than 15% Gorkha students are studying as per RTE 2009. If only medium teachers are provided for the Nepali MIL teacher, they expressed concern that the future generation will be doomed.

Shiva Thapa an Indian Gorkha Boxer is all pumped up for next year

11:06 AM
During the off-season, when most of the boxers relax their body and mind in the confines of their homes, Shiva Thapa is usually a busy man. The 20-year-old boxer from Guwahati is at NIS, Patiala, chiseling the rough edges, assessing the year that flew by and strategising future encounters. For, being one of the most successful young pugilists the focus has slowly but surely shifted to him.

Shiva Thapa Indian Gorkha Boxer
Shiva Thapa an Indian Gorkha Boxer
Gone are the days of Akhils and Suranjoys; Beijing Olympic medallist Vijender Singh is the sole survivor of that generation trading punches for a piece of metal. Shiva Thapa, Devendro Singh, Mandeep Jangra are some of the pugilists who have hogged the limelight this year. Of the lot, Shiva has shown promise when he struck gold, youngest and third Indian to do so, at the Asian Championships.

If the boxing officials have pegged India back in the performance ladder, it is Thapa and Co’s stellar efforts on the international circuit that brought cheer to Indian boxing. Entering only his third season as a senior, Thapa has already become a household name. He has to his credit, some achievements which a boxer can only dream of at the start of the career. From being the youngest to represent India at the London Olympics to the youngest gold medalist at the Asian Boxing Championships, he has seen it all.

But Thapa is not letting all the success and adulation get to his head. “After a week’s rest at home I’m back in training to iron out the glitches in my technique. This is the right time to analyse my performance and work hard to get better. Sometimes, excess of rest can lead to a downfall in your performance. I do not want that to happen and want to be on the top of my game when I represent the country.”

Always touted as the next big thing in Indian boxing, Thapa is not content with whatever ‘little’ success that has come his way. His gung-ho attitude and aggression in the boxing ring has made him one of the fiercest competitors in his category. Also, with his remarkable consistency in the ring, he is now ranked No. 3 in the world.

“All in all, it was a good year for me. It could have been better had I won the World Championships in Almaty. I was hoping for a gold but lost my quarterfinal bout to the eventual winner. This just shows there is still a lot of scope for improvement,” admits Thapa. Asked whether playing without the headguard was a factor in his World Championship loss, he replied in the affirmative. “This was the first time we were playing without the guard, so I was a bit more cautious. But I have learnt from my mistakes and would try not to repeat them.”

But all that is over now. Thapa is all pumped up for the next year, bracing to spin more success stories. “I have my goals set for 2014. I would like to get gold in Asian and the Commonwealth games and am working very hard for it,” he sums up. He is young and has only started to spread his wings. With Commonwealth and Asian Games challenges staring at him, Thapa is ready to fly.
