After a hiatus of nearly seven years, the Gorkha National Women’s Organisation, a frontal unit of the Gorkha National Liberation Front, was re-formed in Kurseong today.
According to reports, a large number of GNWO members from various areas of Kurseong met in the afternoon for a meeting at a hotel in town to form the GNWO Kurseong branch.
Senior GNWO leader Kamala Rai said the town unit has been formed to take forward and strengthen the demand for Sixth Schedule status for the Darjeeling hills. She further informed the Kurseong town committee of the GNWO comprises women cadres residing in Kurseong municipality and other adjoining areas.
Rubina Tamang was selected the GNWO town committee president and Prabina Subba the general secretary. Rai further informed that besides the two leaders, 22 other executive members have been announced for the GNWO Kurseong town committee.
The GNLF is looking to strengthen its women’s wing by forming units across the hills in order to garner more support for its demand for the Sixth Schedule status.
