With the arrest of Maniram Gram Panchayat Pradhan Meera Tamang for issuing residential certificates to unidentified people, Trinamool Congress is once again pushed into a controversy.
Meera was arrested on Thursday night along with Naxalbari Congress block president Sunil Saibo for supporting and insisting to prepare residential certificates without verifying the identity of the people involved.
In February, Sunil insisted Meera to prepare residential certificates of Shayam Saibo and Pawan Saibo and later applied for the voter card of the duo at Naxalbari Block Devolvement Office.
BDO Kinsuk Maity doubted the identity of the applicants and asked the duo to appear in his office. But when they failed to appear he investigated the matter and found they did not belong to the mentioned address. Maity then lodged a complaint at Naxalbari Police station, following which Meera and Sunil were arrested on Thursday from Naxalbari block. Meera won the election Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) ticket, but later joined TMC.
Amar Sinha, Trinamool district secretary and veteran leader of Naxalbari said, “Meera joined TMC after resigning from GJM, but she was not active in the party activities.” According to Sinha, law is equal for everyone but the investigation should be proper before alleging anyone. He said a proper investigation should be conducted on the issue.
Narayan Kundu senior Congress leader of Naxalbari said Sunil has been falsely involved by the police in the matter. He said Sunil is innocent and alleged Trinamool Congress for involving a Congress leader to save Meera, who is the prime accused.
Meanwhile, Left Front party leaders have alleged Trinamool Congress Pradhans for providing residential certificates to militants and foreigners. Gautam Ghosh, Darjeeling district member of CPIM said, “Ever since the Trinamool government came into power the land mafias and militancy activities have increased in the state. Dispite the Kolkata High Court earlier warning Pradhans and MLAs not to issue residential certificates to unidentified nationals, the TMC pradhans are violating the orders repeatedly.”
The arrested duo was today produced at Siliguri Court, where Meera was sent for judicial custody, while Sunil has been taken for three days police remand for further investigation.
