A meeting was held this afternoon at the Chenga Community Hall under Mirik block where leaders of the GJM Sukna-Panighatta unit-1 resolved to participate and support the march to Delhi being planned by the party’s central committee.

The Terai leaders also decided to form a delegation comprising senior members who would meet GJM chief Bimal Gurung in Darjeeling to discuss the problem of the Terai region, especially Panighatta, Lohagarh, Potong, Chenga, Sukna, Simulbari and Nepania, among other areas.

Harihar Acharya, central committee member of the Darjeeling Terai-Dooars

Plantation Labour Union (DTDPLU), the in-charge of the GJM Terai and Dooars unit, said the people’s mandate in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election has given a big blow to the opposition that had claimed the GJM would vanish after the polls.

He said BJP candidate SS Ahluwalia won by a huge margin from all the booths of the Terai region due to the support of the GJM after the party chief’s appeal.

Acharya claimed a state of Gorkhaland appears realistic now given the favourable dispensation at the Centre that has always supported the creation of smaller states. He added to achieve this long-standing demand of the Gorkhas, a large number of people should join the Delhi march to make it a historic event.
