Gangtok, 21 Jul 2014: Work at the upcoming Greenfield Airport at Pakyong, being built at a cost Rs309.46 crore, is 83 per cent complete, according to minister of state for civil aviation GM Siddeshwara. He today informed the Lok Sabha that the Airports Authority of India will operate ATR-72 type aircraft from the airport.
Siddeshwara also said the project got delayed by more than 50 months due to a number of reasons such as connectivity of site, adverse weather conditions, frequent bandhs by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in neighbouring Darjeeling, the September 2011 earthquake including the agitation by residents of areas surrounding the airport project demanding compensation citing damage to their residences. He added the date of completion of the Pakyong airport project can be projected only after all issues pertaining to compensation and security at the site are resolved by the state government.
