Centre favours Gorkhaland demand: Bimal Gurung

“The Gorkhaland issue is now a Centre’s issue. The State government was never honest on the Gorkhaland demand and would never be. We have reached the Gorkhaland demand to the Union government. The BJP led Union government is in favour of creation of smaller States and is positive towards the Gorkhaland demand. Under the BJP-led government, the perennial dream of the Gorkhas would be fulfilled as the dream of Gorkhas is also the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, said GJM president Bimal Gurung on Sunday.

The GJM president was addressing a public meeting at Bijanbari bazaar, Darjeeling subdivision. He had reached Bijanbari on the 10th day of his ongoing Padyatra, as shared in his official social media page.

Gurung said the West Bengal government has realized that Centre favours Gorkhaland and thus trying to bring division among the hill communities for weakening the separate Statehood demand. The regrettable thing is that our own people from the hills have turned traitors and are helping the State government, he said.

The GJM president told the Bijanbari meeting that he will not give trouble to the people of the hills during the Gorkhaland movement. “I will do my best and struggle till my body supports me. It is my pledge to walk 9,000 km on raising awareness for the Gorkhaland movement,” he said.

Gurung said he was conducting the Padyatra across the hills to unite people on the Gorkhaland demand and also to take stock of the problems faced by the villagers. He shared that senior politicians and intellectuals of the hills are giving negative remarks on his Padyatra.

“Now development would start from the rural places. Villagers do not need to go to the offices as the officials themselves would have come to the villages and do developmental works. I have nothing to say to those who term me as ‘mad’ for this,” said the Morcha president.
