Harka Bahadur Chhetri - lie spread by GJM to defame him

Kalimpong, March 7: MLA and Jan Andolan Party president Harka Bahadur Chhetri today iterated that he would contest the Assembly elections from Kalimpong as his party's candidate and not as a representative of the Trinamul Congress, which he said was a lie being spread by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to defame him.

Addressing a press conference here, Chhetri accused the Morcha of launching a sort of hate campaign by spreading a lie that he would contest on a Trinamul ticket.

"To cover up his dwindling popularity and growing corruption, the Morcha president is trying to defame me," he said.

"Harka Bahadur Chhetri is president of JAP. The JAP was formed on 27 January, 2016. Harka Bahadur Chhetri will contest as a JAP candidate," the MLA added.

The JAP president said he did not know the reason why the Trinamul Congress had initially announced his name as the party candidate from Kalimpong.

"But what is more important is the statement given by chief minister Mamata Banerjee to a television channel on the same day that Chhetri would be contesting from his own party, but if he wanted to, he could use the Trinamul symbol," said the MLA.

"In the event of Trinamul extending its support to the JAP candidate, we welcome it. Other than that, whatever is said is nothing more than a conspiracy as part of election strategy," he said.

Asked who the JAP's candidates would be in Darjeeling and Kurseong constituencies, Chhetri said the party would decide on them later.
