GORKHAS UNSAFE IN BENGAL – Removal of names from voters list, points to a bleak future

7:21 AM

Writes Upendra

"First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me - and by then there was no one left to speak out for me."
                                                                                                           - Pastor Martin Niemöller

Of late, a very scary trend has started in our Darjeeling hills, notices are being issued to those Gorkhaland supporters who have gone underground or missing, asking for them to show up at various designated Government offices with 'relevant documents by a certain date', barring which their names will be removed from the voters list.' In a democratic nation like India, where Majority will always thrive, this is a very scary scenario unfolding for the minorities, and especially for micro-minority communities like the Gorkhas, it could translate to the end of any and all forms of resistance and rebellion against the powers that be.

Legally and technically, the district administration is entitled to seek revision of voters list, and as per rule if a person doesn’t live at a local address for over 6 months, her/his name can be removed. The most famous such case was the removal of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's name from the Lucknow Municipal electoral list in September of 2017. However, Mr. Vajpayee had been residing in Delhi for long, and the removal of his name didn't really affect his fundamental right as a citizen of our great nation.

However, in Darjeeling region, the district administration is using this rule to target those Gorkhaland supporters against whom various cases have been filed, and who have gone or remained underground, for fear of injustice looms large.

In such a situation, the people who are missing, cannot and in all likelihood will not, file for their names to be transferred to other jurisdiction to register as voters. Removal of any name from an electoral roll means such individuals cannot exercise their basic duty as a citizen of our nation - to elect the government of its choice. In a country like India, where criminals of all hues and colours thrive, it is rare for the state government to pursue individuals in a manner which deprives them of their citizenship rights. Case in point, Vijay Mallya still features in the electoral list in Bangalore, and Sanjay Dutta - a convicted terrorist supporter/helper also features in the voter list of Mumbai.

What is worrisome in this exercise the district administration has embarked upon, is that, it cruelly curtails our 'right to protest' against a powerful government. The government, in such a case may slap severe charges (actual and fabricated) against any individual forcing him or her to go underground, and then the government may proceed to struck off the name from the electoral roll, thus barring that individual from becoming a part of the democratic process of our nation - they won't get to vote or contest in elections. Which translates to the government, if it so desires, being able to slap cases against its political opponents, cause them to run and then remove their names from the electoral roll, thereby emptying the political field.

Moreover, the government may, if it so decides, start this process of review for everyone from the micro-minority community who have lived outside their home constituency for over 6 months. Imagine, if such a scenario were to play out, almost everyone who were yelling 'Gorkhaland' at Jantar-Mantar or writing and shouting for/against it from anywhere outside Darjeeling region, may actually not retain their voting rights in Darjeeling, if the government of West Bengal decides to take a more draconian stance.

What is really worrisome, in all this is the silence of ALL THE GORKHA POLITICIANS. May be, many are secretly rejoicing at the prospect of having the names of their most detested opponents removed from the voting list, but what they seem to fail to realize is that someday, this same tool of oppression can be and will be used against them. As the Nepali adage goes, " ऊसलाई  खाने बाघले तिमिलाई पनि खान्छ है  - one cannot ride a tiger forever, the tiger will eventually get hungry and run out of other animals to devour." Their silence speaks volumes about how strongly they feel about the welfare of our community.

In comparison when BJP threatened to kick out illegal Bangladeshi refugees from Assam, the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee went on record to challenge the BJP and threatened them with dire consequences if even a single Bangladeshi was touched - forget Indians, she fought for the rights of Bangladeshis, and here in our hills, the Gorkha politicians who are busy serving under her, are instead defending cops who allegedly threatened one of our Gorkha mother and a sister with rape.

Perhaps such is the curse of being born a Gorkha, we seem to be loyal to everyone else, but our own people.

The politics of Vendetta which had consumed a generation of our people, has today infested our community again. When Subash Ghising was removed from the hills GJM had rejoiced, today when Bimal Gurung is removed and hounded similarly, GNLF is rejoicing, so is AT-BT group of GJM. While CPRM, ABGL and JAP have maintained a seemingly dignified silence, their silence too speaks out loud about how they feel about the whole issue. In the race to play the politics of vendetta, the Gorkhas are losing big time. Today we have become so fragmented that we cannot even dare to speak against this hounding out of Gorkhas from our own lands.

It has begun with the missing GJM leaders, but I am certain, this is just the beginning. The Bengal government will use this on everyone of us, who dare to raise our voice for the welfare of our community and people. From asking for "Family tree since 1950" to those who went to seek residential certificate the Bengal government has made it abundantly clear that they view all of us with suspicion. If we are not careful today, a day may come when the Gorkhas will be rendered homeless. Much like what happened in the rest of North East could end up happening here, and we may end up being rendered homeless in our own lands.

So, please speak out against what's happening in Darjeeling today. Because if we let this trend continue, soon a day may come, when you may want to speak out, but your tongues may have been cut without you even realizing it.

Remember, "if you are afraid to speak out against tyranny, you are already a slave"

DESECRATION OF CHOWRASTA DARJEELING

3:33 PM
Editorial: Upendra

Bengal Cheap Minister repeatedly claims "Pahar Hasche," perhaps she doesn't realize its the laughter of amusement at her folly.

While Chowrasta is the heart and soul of Darjeeling, for "bharomohila in power" it is like a Ram Lila Maidan where she can do her political circus, every time she visits Darjeeling. She has no respect for the local sentiments, she has no understanding of our deepest connection with Chowrasta, and yet she claims "Pahar Hasche"

She claims that she loves Darjeeling, but at the end of the day she wants to build a Hawkers Market in Chowrasta and she nearly succeded in doing so... had it not been for the outrage our people showed, by now Chowrasta would be another Maccha Bazar...

Every time she heads up the hills, there is a dread among the truly Darjeeling loving people... is she going to divide the hill populace along ethnic lines more? is she going to go on another round of ego-trip and order a building to be demolished? is she going to transfer an honest and upright officer, just because s/he didn't follow Her Majesties delusional orders?
DESECRATION OF CHOWRASTA DARJEELING
Mamata Banerjee will you ever desecrate Belur Math for your political grandstanding or Victoria Memorial for that matter? if your answer is NO, then what gives you the right to desecrate our beloved Chowrasta every time you visit Darjeeling?

No the politicians and social activists won't outrage over this issue, for it doesn't bother them at all, but its high time that we - the ordinary people of Darjeeling outraged.

How long will we allow idiots who are politicians to ruin our hills?

Politics can stay away for 10 years

8:08 AM

Vivek Ghatani

The toy train and National Highway 55 have become prodigious synonyms in the hills. The landslides are the spot spoiler therefore giving fresh headaches to the authorities of the small train. Not anymore for the highway authorities because as long as the highway is not repaired and maintained, all troubles is the small train headache.

The fresh landslides affected direct train services for DHR is a testimony of how poor developed are the hills. But people in politics are not really worried for it as the more time they take to repair, the longer is their political extension. The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) can escape here because you have no authority to repair the road that has been non-functional since years.

How on earth residents along National Highway 55 are spending life has no impact on the leaders of recent times in the hills. Ofcourse for them there are always more options. The Rohini Road has served best options for Kurseong and Darjeeling to reach Siliguri. Simultaneously a resident in Tindharia has to pay Rs 40 per head per ride when they have to reach Siliguri or Kurseong. That alone means a fare of Rs 80 (up and down) abruptly raising the expense.

The DHR has bored the brunt of major landslides like the residents along Mahanadi, Ghayabari and Tindharia. The small train, infamous all over the world for its manoeuvring engineering works, has been on the low side when it comes to allocation of budget for its maintenance from the centre. The earning for the DHR reportedly has dipped down drastically thus making it difficult to sustain.

The restoration of Highway could have well supported the sustainability for both DHR and residents. Time has come for the Mamata Banerjee to deliver her Switzerland promise for the hills although Calcutta never turned into London as she ascertained.

Politics can stay aside in the hills for some 10 years now because the past three decades of politics for Gorkhaland has hindered development in a greater scale. The loss for no development or rather maintenance of what it has can invariably felt by the common man

When Leaders lack sincerity and acts confused

2:06 PM
Vivek Ghatani for Indian Gorkhas

The day when Gorkhas scattered in India hankered for a homeland must have surely been a hapless day. Because if it takes more than 100 years to achieve statehood – infact still agitating for a dream homeland --- then there is certainly lack of quality leadership and the leaders are either acting confused or muddled.
Subash Ghishing and Bimal Gurung when Leaders lack sincerity and acts confused
Subash Ghishing and Bimal Gurung when Leaders lack sincerity and acts confused
So when leaders are confused or muddled, they happen to be in a centre of hullabaloo somewhat like a clown in a circus adored and laughed at, ultimately forgotten after the show.  For a clown performing trick allows him to earn bread. Once he under-performs, you can read he is in the last day of his career.

The consequence therefore is crammed at one place prowling to find a way out but with no major triumph. Unfortunately, the Madan Tamang murder case is serving not just as good a trick for Calcutta but a curse for the Gorkhas scattered in India; leave alone the godly leadership which is no less than a clown.

In India where you get zero unless you ask for it, making even the slightest mistake can leave you deserted. The Gorkha homeland issue has got profuse slip-ups right from when the agitation began in the late eighties. The leaders, who were given charge by the mass, have no less been a clown in the circus. They earned and then perished leaving things where they were. In other words, they are short of tricks to woe people or their stock of tricks is on the verge of expiration.

When it comes to homeland issue in the hills of Darjeeling people are sober, leaders inopportunely jumble them. When they agitated in late eighties, they were forced to accept an autonomous body. When they agitated in 2007-2011, they were again forced a similar body as earlier.  The blame is not to be bestowed upon Delhi or Calcutta. It is only that the tricks are not working. The trick tactlessly is of paramount significance to a leader not for the spectators.

Now or never for the Gorkhas

8:24 PM
By Vivek Ghatani

Politics is an art to analyse and go with the demand of the people. Ofcourse the Trinamool Congress friends up in the hills has mistakenly taken for granted that ‘development’ plank is the key to win elections. Unfortunately, not the hearts of the hill people which despite winds and storms are always throbbing for a separate statehood.

Now or never for the Gorkhas
I will take the “dreams of the Gorkhas”, Gorkhaland to the Parliament
- S. S. Ahluwalia said to the public gathered for his support.
This is why the Darjeeling parliamentary seat goes to the BJP – now the single largest party at the centre. It is a surprising wonder why Trinamool supporters in the hills although knowing that hill politics and outfits survive on the plank ‘Gorkhaland’ were out with a development plank and agreed to field a footballer who is respected for his soccer talents rather than a politician.

The immaturity shown at this level of politics from the hill Trinamool camp is a mere sign of dividing hill people meant to oppose the statehood. It is no surprise to see the Bimal Gurung led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) joining hands with the NDA as an ally. This is where Mamata Bannerjee and her hill supporters have lost a battle of high spirit in the logger head despite a thumping win. The TMC has won 34 out of the 42 seats but to remain as a spectator.

That Gurung making foray in NDA and Mamata out from it speaks volumes of what is in store in the future. Although this may not be regarded that ‘Gorkhaland’ is right away on the cards. There was a time when Mamata was in a commanding position to hook knock the Gorkhaland agitation led by Gurung but the spectrum of command has changed with Gurung getting a place in the NDA by just supporting BJP in one seat.

The roadway to Gorkhaland now has been an easier path for the GJM for which it does not have to beg the Bengal government. Ofcourse it is to see for the BJP how it delivers its promise to fulfill the dream of the Gorkhas. Easier said than done, fulfilling the statehood demand is not an easy task for the BJP either though it is in a commanding position.

But there isn’t impossible to anything and Telangana formation is a perfect example to it. For the hills now, be it our Trinamool friends, GNLF, CPRM, ABGL, the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) or Dr. Mahendra P.Lama time has come to show its strength.

Having said that the blame game should be over now and focus on the achieving what is required. There is no question of only GJM taking the initiative for unification. Any force has the right to do so. Politics is an art of analysing as said earlier. The analysis says unification is the need for the next five years.  If now, it is never for the Gorkhas again.

Time for BJP to deliver Gorkha sentiments

12:09 PM
Vivek Ghatani

The other day I joked with my Bengali friends. I told them the Darjeeling parliamentary seat – considered prestigious both for Bimal Gurung and Mamata Bannerjee in West Bengal politics – being won with a huge margin by the BJP for the second consecutive time is equivalent to creation of Gorkhaland. I told my Bengali colleague with smiles, “We have achieved Gorkhaland since BJP has won Darjeeling”.

Shri SS Ahluwalia polled a total of 488257 Votes defeating TMC Baichung Bhutia with a margin of 197239 Votes
Shri SS Ahluwalia polled a total of 488257 Votes defeating TMC's Baichung Bhutia with a margin of 197239 Votes

My colleague however in a sudden gesture replied, “The number at the centre is 280 plus and it is not impossible for you to attain state. The fact that a coalition government is a hindrance even for the leaders to work and had it been just a coalition government too i would have denied our claim. Didi has no role to play at the centre and that is a plus point for the Gorkha demand”.

However, keeping jokes aside speaking right away now for ‘Gorkhaland’ it is time that the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) pay back the Gorkhas for supporting them not only in Darjeeling but across the country. The 16th parliamentary polls like in the other parts of the country in Darjeeling too, were fought amidst tight contest. The BJP’s magic figure of 280 plus also has Gorkha sentiments and It is now or never for the Gorkhas of Indian origin to solve their identity crises.

The Gorkhas in Darjeeling has braved the Mamata tirade twice in giving the BJP successive wins which they failed to do so in nooks and corner of the state apart from Asansol.  The last time Gorkhas supported BJP it won the Darjeeling seat with even much huge margin but was unlucky not to find BJP at the helm of affairs. All political pundits cursed the Bimal Gurung led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha for wrong calculation. And this time Bimal has made it right to find BJP not only at the seat of power but with a single largest majority in 500 plus capacity parliamentary.

Time has come for Bimal Gurung and company to halt thinking about development or GTA and rejuvenate for lobbying in the national capital at the earliest that can earn them a good response. The BJP might play a spoilsport because it is eyeing the Bengal Assembly polls after having stood second in most of the constituencies.

Two hill stations lack strong media

9:54 PM
Where media is considered to be the third pillar in a democracy, the quaint hills of Darjeeling and Sikkim are in a shamble to find the local media impact to keep in control the politicians, the government or for that matter a body like Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).

Two hill stations lack strong media
The standard of journalism in this both hill stations where we saw pitched battles among political rivals, it draws attention that the media especially the vernacular print editions did not highlight the core issues in a bid to put forward a clear picture of what the battling outfits are upto before both the regions voted on April 12 and 17.

An unestimated figure tells that Sikkim has around 3 to 4 vernacular dailies, approximately 3 English dailies that are popular while in Darjeeling apart from English dailies published from Siliguri, there is a vernacular daily that is popular among the people in the hills.

By speaking of standard journalism, one expects that newspapers now should come to the level of journalism which Bengali dailies has reached in its endeavour to tell the people truth on what is happening. After years, the dailies that are popular in both the regions are still following the same old trend in journalism that keeps them away from controversy. Obviously, with limited readers it is understood that these dailies does not want to fall into controversy for reasons that it would not survive long.

But given that fact that time has come for the print media in both the regions to be stronger, it is recommendable that the format of the news be altered. The people of the region have been suffering for long and have no proper message delivering medium which is keeping them behind. In trying to keep its circulation intact, the media has been promoting events and news which actually in any newspaper does not find a place.

That a committee of a particular organization is formed in reality does not fir in the format of news but correspondents or reporters have been flooding the desk with such items. For readers this has been forcefully imposed for them to read.

Eventually, there is lack of strong media that highlights core issue, problems, controversies and many more.

SHAMEFUL ACT OF BRAVE GORKHAS

8:10 PM
The Gorkhas have been talking of guarding the country. They raised their heads high when the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi described them as “Brave Gorkhas” and “trusted more than the police” recently.  The two incidents of rape on a 3 year old and 4 year old both in the Kalimpong subdivision recently is a shameful act to counter the comments from BJP bigwig.
SHAMEFUL ACT OF BRAVE GORKHAS
Enough is Enough Stop Rape...
The rape on minors, apart being a shameful one would send a wrong signal to those who has been tagging the Indian originated Gorkhas often as citizens of Nepal. Two minors one from Teesta, 16 km from Kalimpong and the other from near Sikkim-Bengal border were allegedly raped and the culprits arrested. Ofcourse, cases of rape in both sensitive Darjeeling hills and Sikkim are on the rise which needs immediate check.

Irrespective of political colour, rising above the conducive atmosphere, people and the law makers should deal with these cases in a strict manner without any favour so that such incident does not put the Gorkhas in an awkward position. Because, no matter what to some extent the community despite fighting for identity crises is only respected in India for their honesty in guarding the country.

The shameful act like this will make things ugly for the community. The community had walked through the streets with candles in their hands protesting against the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang rape case. But today neither nearby Sikkim bothered to even hold a protest rally against the incident even when such heinous act occurred near them.

The literary lot, presently in deep sleep, in both the regions has a work for themselves to do. Coming out from the honorary level is the need of the hour. Writing stories in Nepali and waiting for the award is not only the mantra to be in the list of literary figures. The society needs your education to multiply more literacy rate in the hills of both Darjeeling and Sikkim.

Bimal’s courageous act against Mamata

12:04 AM
Is a sign of getting back form like a cricketer who loses his place in the team

VIVEK GHATANI

Bimal Gurung seems to be back in form like a cricketer who loses his place in the Indian cricket team eventually after losing form. The septuagenarian leader who revolted against Subash Ghisngh in 2007 had made people speak up their mind while Ghisingh had turned out to be a tryst for 20 odd years.

Ofcourse on the hindsight, he lost the credibility by accepting the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and making the wrong moves. Gorkhaland is a sentimental issue and backing away from it has always been hazardous for leaders in the hills.

Bimal Gurung and Mamata Banerjee in Darjeeling
Bimal Gurung and Mamata Banerjee in Darjeeling
This cameo for political survival interestingly looks to have hit Gurung’s mind just ahead of the polls where he chooses to back BJP, likely to come to power at the centre, with a hope that the demand for separate state finds justice.

The consequence of attacking chief minister Mamata Banerjee repeatedly since the past two days may not be a formidable one. A short interview to a TV journalist on Thursday – the day which was considered as a voting day for and against Gorkhaland – Gurung categorically dared it did not matter whether Mamata or other forces opposed the creation of Gorkhaland as long as the centre actually does it.

The change in tactics or approach towards politics from Bimal obviously is because the once regarded King of the hills is back in the hills. Though silently, Subash Ghisingh has started to make base in the hills and that is a bigger danger for Bimal rather than what he has to face from Mamata post election. Mamata has announced publicly that GJM would have to face the wrath after the polls for not supporting her.

Whether people mostly from the hills voted GJM-BJP alliance was eventually was of much importance for the party though throughout the day. Because if it does not prove mandate this polls, the GJM certainly will have to lose the driver’s seat which means Ghisingh would then rise as a dominant force. So, under given circumstances it is a necessity for Bimal to open his eyes and strike the right move before Ghisingh and Mamata capitalizes in it.

The poll results later to come ofcourse will speak volumes of what GJM would have to face in the coming days.

BIMAL GURUNG ADMITTING MISTAKE

8:40 PM
Ourtake: With one realising mistake, people tend to forget. Bimal realising mistake is a right move at the right time.

Bimal Gurung seems to have finally begun to understand politics. By admitting that long bandhs were a mistake, he has opened doors for himself to get back the status he enjoyed in 2007 when he revolted against Subash Ghisingh and formed the GJM with a promise to achieve Gorkhaland.

Bimal Gurung addressing the crowd today in Darjeeling Public Meeting

At a time when the people of the hills had a divided opinion on Gurung who staged a flop show last August by calling a month long bandh demanding Gorkhaland, the gesture to admit his mistake could well swell some votes for his BJP candidate. The lack of political maturity had been exposed when Mamata Banerjee easily foiled Gurung’s last battle for Gorkhaland last August with strong administrative steps.

Gurung on Tuesday remarked to take the agitation or protest for Gorkhaland to the country capital instead of shutting down the hills. Gurung was right in every possible way to say that people suffered due to mistakes. It must be added here that people suffered with no dividends and admitting the mistake is a sign of political maturity.

This election where every candidate has had various issues, the GJM it must be known has a single point agenda ‘Gorkhaland’. It was Subash Ghisingh, the GNLF chief who did wonders by demanding Gorkhaland and ruled for 20 years like a king. Though on the hindsight Ghisingh turned into a tryst.

It was Bimal Gurung who was doing wonders until he accepted the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). This election many are supporting various candidates. The reason for this was only the lack of leadership maturity that Gurung had been showing to the people.

By realizing mistake and admitting in public, Mamata should be wary of now that Gurung is turning onto be a true leader. Whether his stance to support BJP is right or not does not matter but when one realises his mistakes people tend to forgive.

Lama’s act of confidence

9:39 PM
Our take: Confidence to win worthless, confidence to attain statehood makes sense

Top political leaders visited Darjeeling over the past couple of days. Narendra Modi, the BJP prime ministerial candidate urged voters to vote for change. Mamata Bannerjee, the Bengal chief minister spoke in Nepali to urge the voters. And here we saw the ‘Son of the soil’ (read Dr. Mahendra P.Lama) who declared himself a winner instead of urging the voters.

Dr. Mahendra P.Lama public meeting in Darjeeling
Dr. Mahendra P.Lama public meeting in Darjeeling
It makes us simply to say, being confident is a good gesture but over-confident will lead you down. A over confident message suckled out from his mouth in an election campaign rally could be a disaster for the economist. It must be realized at this hour that candidates in the poll fray are just beggars asking for votes.

The lack of clear political maturity is visible even before you are beginning to fight for demand. Bimal Gurung, the GJM chief a few years back lacked the same political maturity by saying, “People can shoot me in the forehead if i don’t bring Gorkhaland by 2010”. The year 2010 has gone cut past, it is now 2014 and we are yet looking for a true leadership to raise our voice in the parliament.

Dr. Mahendra P.Lama is acting in the same way as Bimal Gurung. It is every leadership’s quality to say before the polls that ‘I will raise the demand in the parliament’. People in the hills need to know the actual roadmap for achieving Gorkhaland. Your confidence to win is of little importance for the people. Your confidence to achieve statehood is of utmost importance.

The need of the hour in the hills is not that who will represent the people in the Lok Sabha. The need of the hour in the hills is unification which is in squat and shambles because of outer political forces slowly invading the hill political arena.

The unity is at stake and requires revamp. The hills are in need for a leadership who can first unite the hill people. Only then the demand for separate statehood would be taken forward.

NaMo praises Gorkha honesty, does not utter ‘Gorkhaland’

8:36 PM
"Give us five years and see what we do: NaMo to Voters"

Pachkalguri (Siliguri), April 10: Narendra Modi (NaMo), the BJP prime ministerial candidate blustered the chief minister, alleged change of governance a fake one but praised the Gorkhas while he promised to fulfill the aspirations of the Gorkhas, Adivashis and Rajbonshis in his first ever political appearance in North Bengal on Thursday.

NaMo praises Gorkha honesty, does not utter ‘Gorkhaland’
Narendra Modi's Speech in Siliguri Darjeeling on 10th April 2014

Addressing a packed crowd of around 1.5 lakhs supporters of GJM-BJP-KPP combine, NaMo left no stone unturned woe the sentiments of the Gorkhas presumably knowing that BJP candidate S.S.Ahaluwalia for the Darjeeling is banking on the support of the GJM to seek a berth from Bengal. He chose though not to utter the word “Gorkhaland” but said, “When people have no faith on the police, they have faith on the Gorkhas and rely on their honesty. You dream is our dream”.

The BJP candidate from Varanasi added that the Gorkhas have been ignored. Taking the example of Tenzing Sherpa, the man who climbed Mt. Everest along with Sir Edmund Hillary, he said, “Both Delhi and Bengal have forgotten to honour such a great man. Time has come now to serve the demand of the Gorkhas, Rajbonshis and Adivashis”.

The party which is running high in spirits in India had stroke a deal with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) before the name for the Darjeeling seat was announced. The GJM has pledged support to the party with a hope that it will take a positive step towards formation of ‘Gorkhaland’ – a separate state to be carved out from Bengal. Banerjee however is univocal who has tie and again repeated that she will not allow division of Bengal.

The BJP manifesto that was released on April 7 interestingly had not mentioned about Gorkhaland putting prospects of BJP winning the seat in jeopardy but later brought out an addendum saying that it would sympathetically looking into the long pending demands of the Gorkhas, Adivashis and Rajbonshis.

Touching upon the infiltrators issue he said, “The Bangladeshi infiltrators have eaten up your rights,” he said adding the Delhi and West Bengal governments are not sympathetic for the sons of the soil.

Attacking the chief minister unlike in his rally in Kolkata where he had said that he supported the Bengal cash strap problem he lambasted saying that the change in Bengal is a fake one. “Rather than doing politics of vote bank by appeasing a particular community, she should have competed with smaller states in the field of development. The two and half years of governance of the TMC in West Bengal, has made people frustrated,” he added.

“The change in West Bengal is a fake one and you should now vote for the real change,” he said before his 32 minute-long-speech ended appealing to people to give the BJP five years time to serve them and see what it can do for the country.

Earlier in the morning the BJP’s star campaigner reached Pachkalguri on the outskirts of Siliguri by helicopter after arriving at Bagdogra airport in a chartered plane.

The crowd went hysteric after Modi’s helicopter was sited forcing S S Ahluwalia the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Darjeeling to stop his speech to raise the slogans like Har Har Modi and Abki Bar Modi Sarkar. Bimal Gurung the GJM president, Ahluwalia, Rahul Sinha the BJP West Bengal state president and Atul Roy the Kamtapur People’s Party (KPP) president, who were present on the dias welcomed him.

RECALLING THE BLACK DAY FOR GORKHALAND APRIL 9

9:25 PM

"Ourtake: Justice should be in the form of Gorkhaland "

“April 9 is considered as the "Blackest Day" for all Gorkhaland supporters as it was in this day in 2008 that our ex servicemen were injured in a lathi charge by the police when conducting a peaceful rally for Gorkhaland. Till date now no proper action has been taken by the government on this matter. The GJM demands a high level enquiry in this incident. I would appeal to all ex servicemen to vote for the BJP so that we are able to convince the coming BJP Government for a high level enquiry in this matter. Today our Bharatiya Gorkha Bhutpurwa Sainik Morcha is organizing a rally from Darjeeling More to Milan More”—Bimal Gurung on Facebook.

April 9th "Blackest Day" for all Gorkhaland
April 9th "Blackest Day" for all Gorkhaland
Gorkhas have been manning the border since India procured independence. The ex-servicemen who were charged up by the police on this very day, April 9 ofcourse was a sad day for the Gorkhas living in the country. Bimal Gurung has rightly demanded justice ahead of this poll season and rallied his ex-servicemen unit to the streets of Darjeeling.

Though the demand comes ahead of the polls, many might be making a guess that the ploy is to grab voters in a bid to make sure that the BJP wins and GJM serves its promises. In such sense, again the GJM is using sentiments to win the seat. The hills have been acting on sentiments since years and are still lacking to prepare a roadmap to achieve statehood.

Speaking on the justice to ex-servicemen on this very day the GJM is making a ploy to make people believe that ‘they’ are still sincere with the issue amidst doubts from the pro-Gorkhaland forces, those who are anti-GJM and not satisfied with the way GJM are handling things.

Results are a far story for the Darjeeling seat now because unlike in the past equation allows one to be unpredictable this time. But if S.S.Ahaluwalia wins the seat, the onus to deliver justice to these ex-servicemen lies with the BJP then. The GJM has a role to play definitely in the long run and the servicemen should not tolerate if the issue fades away after polls. The ex-servicemen unit of the GJM should be aware that April 9 incident cannot be used as just an issue to get votes. So the right justice for these ex-servicemen for their sacrifice should be nothing less than ‘Gorkhaland’.

Ahead of polls indication throttle betrayal for Gorkhas

"Political blunder unfolding, post poll high drama in store"

Even before the votes are to be polled, an indication has throttled one to believe that the hills are on the edge of betrayal once again. The question is now whether BJP will bring out an addendum or not. The bigger question is why it is not incorporating the demand for Gorkhaland in their manifesto. Why an addendum suddenly?

Addendum : BJP Election Manifesto 2014

The answer however lies with the BJP itself; there is no denying into the fact. But what it has done is they have put the Bimal Gurung lead Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) at high risk. The risk of being uprooted like the once king of the hills Subash Ghisingh. The risk ironically was even there when it agreed to accept the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) bypassing the people’s sentiment.

Having said that the GJM now in the position they are is also not safe from the state ruled Trinamool Congress. A political blunder seems to be unfolding yet again in the hills and this time one can expect that high stage political drama is awaiting post polls.

The elections this season is anybody’s game given the fact the hill votes are on the helm of division. The hill votes until five years back was a conglomerate unit that decided the fate of any regional or National parties that fielded candidates.

If BJP wins which looks to be bleak at the moment, the GJM is sure to face the wrath of the TMC. If TMC wins, it should again be ready to face TMC wrath. The BJP even if it wins ‘Gorkhaland’ looks deemed for the people of the hills. In all this it would not be wrong to predict the rise of GNLF and its king ‘Subash Ghisingh’ who is waiting at his Dr. Zakir Hussain Road. His silent politics is surely waiting for ‘Lal Kothi’ the erstwhile DGHC headquarters now GTA headquarters.

Blame game not priority, it is how much people can tolerate

9:57 PM

Political maturity is missing within Gorkha communities.

How far the blame game goes is not the priority. At what length the people would be able  to tolerate makes the difference. The issue of separate statehood in the Darjeeling parliamentary seat has once again started to haunt the voters after it was given a quite burial with a strong administrative whip enforced by Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government.

Bimal Gurung GJM Chief

Yes after all it is the people, who have to make a difference between the four ships in the ocean, make a call for the right person to lead them to their destination.

The issue might be ‘Gorkhaland’ this polls in the politically acclimatized Darjeeling hills, but the bigger one unfortunately is to win in a bid to keep its political existence and dominate the field for it to be the only choice for the people. Truth is always bitter and that comes to tell us that ‘Gorkhaland’ has become only a promise to make from all ends while the entire episode of campaigning has become a mere blame game.

Political maturity is falling short for the Gorkha community. When GJM attended the Trinamool Congress brigade rally recently, most had to say that the GJM was anti-Gorkhaland. Now the GJM alleges that the GNLF is anti Gorkhaland for it giving support to the Trinamool. The politics in reality is not ‘who ought to be what’. Gorkhaland does not even require politics.

The leaders fighting for a single seat in the hills are fighting it like as if they are on the verge of forming the government. The seat ‘sympathetically’ should be won for taking the voices of the Indian Gorkhas to the parliament and find other friends there to support the creation of Gorkhaland.

The BJP though may form the government but may have its own political compulsion. The fact cannot be forgotten that a single majority is a tough task at the centre given the battle for power in National politics. It is the regional parties that could come in the way for anyone to form the government. The BJP would not mind to forge an alliance with the TMC and that can be a major threat any development on Gorkhaland.

Mind games & right moves matters in Politics

So long parties sketch road plans, it is anybody’s game

Mind games and the right move matters in politics. The maverick Subash Ghisingh’s expected move to support the Trinamool Congress’s football player Bhaichung Bhutia may have raised eyebrows to many but simultaneously it has gone on to show that, those alleging Mamata’s hand in bringing Ghisingh to the hills, has failed to address the key issue of separate state.

That Ghisingh is back in the hills could be Mamata’s politics cannot be ruled out. At the same time it cannot be ruled out that the hill party on whose hand the demand was laid by the people offered lots of weaker points for her to act in an easy way.

Mind games & right moves matters in Politics
In the larger context, it is easy to say than deliver. The hill party after ousting the once regarded ‘king of the hills’ in 2008 successfully was bound to find him back in the hills. The party lacked proper planning to lay the foundation for taking the demand to the highest point.

Even today, with two weeks left for the first vote to be polled, the GJM-BJP alliance is failing to tell us the actual plan and programme for the creation of Gorkhaland. The only promise made by the BJP is it would look to the demand ‘sympathetically’. The GJM is only hopeful that the BJP will create the 30th state of the country as ‘Gorkhaland’.

For once if we forget the past, Ghisingh has not uttered or demanded ‘Gorkhaland’ in the long run. He has stuck himself with implementation of sixth schedule which he feels is a stepping stone towards creation of Gorkhaland. The Bodoland Territorial Council in Assam under the sixth schedule status is a recent example to that. The centre has agreed to form a committee to look into the possibility of formation of Bodoland; a demand of the Bodo’s which is very young to Gorkhaland.

So, even if it is Mamata’s plan to bring back Ghisingh to the hills in a bid to cut size the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) it should not pose a problem for the people of the hills so long Ghisingh has a plan to attain statehood through his silent politics. Ofcourse that means it is definitely posing threats of eradication for the GJM within just a few years as long as it does not sketch a road plan to attain statehood immediately.

Democratic norms demands peaceful atmosphere

11:43 PM
"Election campaign requires issue, not violence"

Elections are meant in India or any other country to select people of calibre to run the government in a proper way. And to have polls in the congenial atmosphere becomes of utmost importance here. The trend that has culminated in recent times, of violence and bloodshed, attack on each other with weapons, by pelting stones and ransacking vehicles while we witness campaign trail by political outfits instead of highlighting the issues that really needs to be addressed for upliftment of the state or constituency is what people are fed up off.

Ranipool poll violence
Ranipool poll violence
This pre-election period both in the Himalayan state of Sikkim and the neighbouring Darjeeling parliamentary constituency, cases of violence and attack on leaders and political parties amidst them is on the rise. The democratic norm in context to voters of both the region demands a peaceful atmosphere to cast their valuable votes.

The new born debutant Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has had clash with the veteran Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) on a number of occasions this poll season. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in Darjeeling hills claimed attack on their chief Bimal Gurung allegedly by the Trinamool Congress men.

The SKM in Sikkim has been planking change. But the approach and attitude to bring change in the state is the same old story. The politics to bring about change has the same process. If you mean to bring change for the benefit of the state, an old wine should be replaced with a new wine in a new bottle. Otherwise you are hungry for only power just to become yet another SDF in the state.

When the GJM was born in 2007, the party similarly claimed attack from GNLF and vice versa. Later it presumably got involved in the Late Madan Tamang murder case. Tamang was killed with a sharp local weapon Khukuri under broad daylight. The dividend for the alleged act is that the GJM is still not in a position to function in a free atmosphere. Every now and then the party goes harsh on ‘Gorkhaland’ issue, Didi (Mamata Banerjee) the Bengal Chief Minister cum Trinamool chief whips down using the case against them. The people are witnessing all the events.

That who injured whom, who attacked whom is not a matter of concern for the voters. Irrespective of political colours the concern and agenda to win elections needs to be your plan and programme to achieve what you promise to the people. If you are up for change show us the sketch plan for change. If you are up for ‘Gorkhaland’ show us a sketch plan to achieve the demand.

For the voters, it’s time to focus on the issues for betterment rather than a minimum profit.

Double mouthing could foil things for BJP-GJM alliance - HIMALAYAN TALK

Danger to Follow: King is back to find his place

When it comes to general elections in the country, the Darjeeling parliamentary seat has always drawn attention in North Bengal. The area or constituency being a conglomerate of the plains and the hills, the voters divided over the demand of the Gorkhas vis-a-vis the Gorkhaland state to be carved out of West Bengal, this time too has been the seat which is most talked about.

Having said that in the last parliamentary election Jaswant Singh the BJP nomine for the seat managed an easy win and despite the CPIM giving a first-class fight, for the observers it had been an easy guess to them before the polls as to who would win. The BJP then had also promised to look into the Gorkha demand ‘sympathetically’. The voters convinced then showered blindly with their votes to Jaswant.

Even before the first vote is to be casted, people here have got a reason not to believe the BJP and its ally the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). The anecdote is fast changing with barely two weeks remaining for the region to go to polls. The politics of winning the game is fast changing with Bhaichung Bhutia meeting Subash Ghisingh, the king who once ruled the hills and turned the table with his gracious googlies.

The politics of double mouthing is what the hill voters are looking into and that could foil things for both BJP and its backing partner the GJM. The danger however interestingly for some could be that the king has come to the hills hungry to conquer its place of pride.
