Guwahati 9th May 2016/Tinsukia 10th May 2016: The Guwahati city unit of All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) the apex influential organisation of Gorkha students and youth of Assam organized a Candle light assemble seeking justice to the Margherita rape and murder victim. 20 years old Champa was kidnapped on 28th April evening on the way back home from Margherita The dead body of Champa was recovered from Dehing river in Margherita. Two accused Moinul Ali and Biswajit Khatri have been arrested. A case has been registered at Margherita Police Station case Number 94/16 U/S 366,376,342/34 IPC against the youths.

AAGSU favours most sensitive and responsive mechanism to address atrocities on woman and children with deterrent laws to the extent of chemical castration and death penalty for Rapists and also maintain a rape accused electronic directory to raise red alert on their movement.

Celebrated Mountaineer who scaled the Mount Everest thrice Ms. Anshu Jamsenpa from Arunachal Pradesh, Miss Asia University 2016, Femina Miss India Miss Popular and Miss Multimedia super model Rewati Chetri, Ms. M Sangma, celebrity cancer survivor cyclist from Meghalaya, president of Greater Guwahati Gorkhali Women society Lila Rai addressed more than five hundered women, youths and college students. The organizers Resham Sharma, General Secretary of AAGSU Guwahati Mahanagar, Ramesh Bastola Advisor of All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union (AMGSU) , Santosh Acharya and Mona Bastola president and general secretary respectively of Guwahati City Unit of AMGSU, Kamal Pradhan youth activist and co-convenor of Gorkha Youth of Guwahati (GYG), were present.

Meanwhile on Monday the All Assam Gorkha Students Union had called Tinsukia district bandh against the brutal rape and murder of Gorkha girl seeking saw widespread support from the people in the district. All the main areas like Makum, Jagun, Margherita, Tinsukia, Bargolai have remained completely shut down. Police have however detained numerous AAGSU activists for enforcing the bandh at the time of filing this report. Speaking to mediapersons from Tinsukia district headquarters president of Tinsukia Dist. AAGSU Numal Chetry said, ‘This shut down is mark of protest seeking justice for victim, and the bandh was fully successful due mass public support.’

Assam, May 8: Greater Guwahati Gorkhali Mahila Samiti and All Manipur Gorkha Student’s Union, along with Guwahati City Unit and Gorkha Youths of Guwahati (GYG) organised a Candle lit programme at Gorkha Thakurbari (Nepali Mandir), Paltan Bazar, Guwahati on Sunday 5 PM. seeking justice to our sister Champa Chetry who was brutally raped and murdered at Borgolai Margheritha Tinsukia Assam on 29th April 2016.

Assam mechanic builds ‘jugaad’ helicopter, awaits clearance

Vehicles struggle to reach Shyamjuli, a village 450km northeast of Assam’s principal city, Guwahati. This was the reason why Chandra Siwakoti Sharma, a school dropout, built a helicopter that he says can carry two people 30-50ft above the ground.

An automobile mechanic, Sharma spent more than Rs15 lakh to design the helicopter with metal sheets, car seats and two SUV engines. He has named it Pawan Putra, a sort of a “jugaad”, or innovative fix, he worked on primarily to give his backward area a faster mode of communication.

Shyamjuli is in Dhemaji district, Assam’s remotest and almost always flood-affected.
“My helicopter can fly, though not as fast as the ones in operation for civil or military duty. It can easily move at 50kmph,” Sharma says.

He is awaiting clearance from authorities concerned to find out if his aircraft really works.

“We want to encourage a person who has conquered adversities to make a helicopter without any degree in aviation. But we want to go by the rules first,” said Victor Carpenter, the district’s deputy commissioner.

Carpenter said the district administration would write to the chief of civil aviation regulator DGCA and others who deal with such cases. “We are exploring the possibility of at least facilitating a trial for the chopper that Sharma has built.”

Locals, enthused by Sharma’s innovation, have already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One of them, Ganesh Karki, pointed out that the helicopter was one of the best examples of Modi’s ambitious “Make in India” project.

“Sharma could not study beyond class 3 because of poverty, but invested all his savings and even sold his land to follow his dream. He needs to be encouraged,” Karki wrote.
Sharma said local officials and officers from an army camp nearby have promised to witness the trial of his helicopter once he gets permission.

“I did run the engines once. The rotor was forcing the helicopter up, but I stopped the engines in order to not violate any rules,” he said.

Binita Chhetry wins Pond’s Eclectic Model Hunt 2015

GUWAHATI, November 30: Indian Gorkha's daughter Binita Chhetry from Guwahati was crowned as the winner of Pond’s Eclectic Model Hunt 2015 by Emika Pakyntein in front of a packed crowd at ITA Machkhowa auditorium, Pond’s Eclectic Model Hunt 2014 Winner, Tanushree Hazarika, Managing Director of Eclectic Publications and fashion designer Joy Mitra, said a press release.

It said, the 1st Runner-up was awarded to Kaheli Chophy from Dimapur and the 2nd Runner-up to Nandita Saikia from Guwahati, and the prestigious panel of judges of the event were fashion designer Joy Mitra, Shikhar Sidharth, Managing Director of Vogati Talents, Assamese actor Vaishalee Saikia, former model and pastry chef Mandakini Dass and social worker Miani D Shira from Shillong.

The contest was enlivened by an impressive and diverse line-up of talents from across the region. Sangeet Natak Academy award winner Moinul Haque’s mime act kept the audience enthralled, and the final performance was by Guwahati based band Swadhyay who had the crowd grooving to their peppy beats, said the press release.

It said, the event is managed by Tattva Creations Pvt Ltd and the main idea behind Pond’s Eclectic Model Hunt is to groom talented young women from across the Northeast and encourage them to become empowering role models of beauty, health and leadership.

Guwahati 15th Oct 2015: The book ‘From the Mountain to the Ocean-Run with Roshni’was released on Saturday at Gauhati Press Club, Guwahati by Anshu Jamsenpa, first mother in the world and only Indian woman who scaled the Mount Everest thrice and Ms. Pomi Baruah, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister, Govt. of Assam in a book release and interactive session organized by Gorkha Youth of Guwahati (GYG) and Mantraa Media & Events and powered by North East Today – NE India’s leading news magazine. Avas Foundation and Run with Roshni Founadtion supported the initiative and organizations viz All Assam Gorkha Students Union; Guwahati City Committee, All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union (AMGSU), Guwahati City Unit, students of various colleges of Guwahati city including the Cotton College and Guwahati University and others accorded her welcome and felicitations. Roshni Rai, Indian Gorkha International Ultra Marathon Runner and founder of Run with Roshni which is very extensive and ambitious venture, spreading awareness about “Indian Gorkhas” and its age old identity crisis said that the book ‘From the Mountain to the Ocean-Run with Roshni’ is story of a patriot community who not only laid down lives for the nation but contributed in the nation building process demanding their Indian identity in India and statehood since a century now.

The motivational speaker was invited as Special Guest of Honour for an interactive session and released the ‘LOHIT PUTRA’ – the mouthpiece of GGGSF. Recalling an incident about racial discrimination She said,’Like you all in 2004 I had found new life in Mumbai while I went to study LLM in Mumbai University , yet I felt a tug in my heart as I yearned to feel the mountain air and watch the mist move seductively through the undulating hills of Pedong, Kalimpong sub division of Gorkha dominated Darjeeling district of proposed Gorkhaland. I was rudely shaken from my reverie when I heard taunts from the local boys “Oiy...Chinky...Minky...” “ Oiy.....Chicken Chili” “ Oiy...Oiy..Kancheee..” “Oieeee Nepali..” In a fit of rage I strode over to the group and said “I am from Darjeeling, India and yes proud to be a Gorkhali, and an Indian”

Replying to a question on Gorkhas of Assam and Gorkhaland an advocate by profession Roshni Rai said ‘Darjeeling is the heart of the Gorkhas but Assam is the face of Gorkhas of the Nation and Gorkhaland is not about Darjeeling alone, it is the aspiration of 10.5 millions Gorkhas of this country out of which more than 30 lakhs I am told are in Assam.’ The Gorkha Gaurav Awardee instituted by Gorkhaland Terrritorial Administration added that her mission is to empowering the Gorkhas and enlightening others about the Gorkhas .

I have chosen Sports that is Marathon as medium to air my voice towards racial discrimination which common for all Mongolian orientation faces from the North East in mainland India and I feel by and large I have been quite successful. I am delighted to be here in this beautiful and holy city of Guwahati and thank the organizers Gorkha Youth of Guwahati and Avas Foundation for their support and Mantraa Group of Companies for arranging my book release function and sponsors for their wholesome support. I must acknowledge team Mantraa Media & Events headed by Nanda Kirati Dewan for his constant support in my initiatives making this a happen in Guwahati.

Anshu Jamsenpa, the only Indian woman mountaineer who climbed the Mt. Everest thrice lauded Roshni’s efforts in documenting her thoughts and vision striving hard to achieve her mission. Pomi Barauh OSD to CM, Govt. of Assam appreciated the mission undertaken under Run with Roshni Foundation to train Indian underprivileged youths for Olympic Marathon medals. She assured Roshini of all possible support at her capacities to support the cause undertaken. Dr. Bharatiya the director of Vicky Publishers proposed to translate the book in Bengali and publish it from Assam for Bengali readers across the country so they also understand the quest of Indian Gorkhas for statehood and that Gorkhaland is not separation from Bengal but identity aspiration Gorkha people in India.

Guwahati 5th Sec 2014: Veteran social worker of the state Devika Sharma, 54, popular among the Gorkha Youths of Guwahati as Devika Bozu passed away yesterday at International Hospital at 11.35 am in the morning leaving behind her husband Krishna Sharma son Dipendra Sharma and daughter Ronita Sharma and host of well wishers and relatives. Devika Bozu from her young age has been a motivator Gorkhali women folk around and was kind and generous person. She extended all possible help to the people who were in need. Socially active Devika Bozu played a pivotal role in forming the Greater Guwahati Gorkhali Mahila Samiti at the of her death she was serving the organisation as its Advisor. It was under her collective leadership that the ‘Teez’ nritya pratiyogita in Guwahati got support from masses and it was staged every year at Pragjyotika ITA, Machkhowa auditorium. She was also associated as advisor of the Nepali Mandir Prabandhak Samity previously Gorkha Panchayat of Gorkha Thakurbari now Nepali Mandir since a long time now. She has encouraged many youths and women in today’s generation to work for the development of the community. AAGSU Guwahati City committee General Secretary Resham Sharma and vice president Suman Rai are current examples of her blessings. Devika Bozu was known to have associated several civil society organisations working for women and childwelfare and always advised youths to be flag bearer of the community and society at large.
Here at Nepali Mandir today AAGSU central executive member and former publicity secretary Nanda Kirati Dewan who had worked closely with her on several occasion said,’Devika Bozu will remain inspiration for generations. Her words of advise to be a symbolic Gorkha is so relevant today, I deeply mourn her untimely demise. It is a irreparable loss to our Gorkha society’. AAGSU Guwahati City Committee General Secretary Resham Sharma condoled the death of veteran social worker and paid last tribute to departed soul on behalf of Gorkha youths of Guwahati at the cremation ground.
Her funeral last evening was attended by thousands of well wishers. The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Guwahati City Committee, Greater Guwahati Gorkhali Mahila Samiti , Akhil Assam Gorkha Sammelan, Nepali Mandir Prabandhak Samity and several Gorkha civil society organisations have condoled her death. The Ardhya Shradhha will be held at Nepali Mandir, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati premises on 16th Dec 2014, Tuesday and the family member have invited all concern to pay tribute to departed soul.

AAGSU placed decade long demand of Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC) to PM, Narendra Modi, in Guwahati. The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) the influential apex students and youth organization of the Gorkhas of Assam along with 26 community organizations and few civil society organizations yesterday met India’s prime minister Narendra Modi in Guwahati during his maiden visit to Assam and Northeast on 29th November 2014 in Raj Bhawan, Guwahati.

AAGSU delegation lead by its president Prem Tamang and general secretary Bharat Chhetry met and felicitated the Prime Minister with a Gorkha traditional Bhaadgoanley cap and neck skirf khada and placed before the PM Gorkhas of Assam decade long demand of creation of Gorkha Autonomous Council (GAC) along with eight other demands that includes ST status to Khambu (Rai), Limboo, Sherpa, Tamang, Magar, Gurung and SC status to Kami, Damai, Sarki, Gaine and Bhujel and others in central OBC list, declaration of flood of Assam as national problem, preservation and protection of one horned rhino, special status to Gorkhas in defence and declaration of Bharti Dwitya (Bhai Dhooj) as national holiday.
Talking to mediapersons here in Guwahati today AAGSU president Prem Tamang said,’The Hon’ble PM gave a patient hearing to the demands of Gorkhas of Assam.’ All legitimate and genuine demands with purview of Constitution of India will be taken care , the prime minister informed the delegation’ said Tamang.
‘I am happy that the amidst busy schedule, he could find time to connect with people through community organizations and CSOs and his response to most of us with presence of mind was overwhelming, I am thankful the BJP Mps of the state Rameswar Teli, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Ram Prasad Sharma for their support and I must specially mention and thank Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports’ Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal for briefing to Prime Minister regarding the Gorkhas of the state during our meeting and for facilitating it’, said the AAGSU president.
Prime Minister Modi has invited AAGSU to New Delhi to further discuss the matter incorporated in the memorandum. ‘We are likey to go New Delhi in 2nd week of January to meet the PM once again and discuss GAC in Assam and our other demands inclusions of tribes of Gorkha in central ST, SC and others in OBC listetc. . It will depend on his schedule and PMO’s confirmation.’ added Tamang . Gorkhas of the state are thankful to Prime Minister Modi in this regard.
