The meeting was held at the Babari playground where around 300 people had come to hear Lama speak on various aspects, including development of the hills.

Conducted by CK Pradhan, the meeting saw the presence of Gorkhaland Task Force coordinator R Moktan and DDUDF Kalimpong unit convener Sonam T Bhutia among others.

Lama listed three prime reasons that have led to the present condition of the Gorkhas in India. According to him, lack of proper education is the most important factor contributing to the present condition of the community. He said other communities have gone far ahead in the field of education.

Secondly, the absence of Gorkhas in higher levels of administration has also contributed to their pitiful state. Lama said only when Gorkhas take the helm as administrators is development in the hills possible. Thirdly, he said the parochial nature of the Gorkhas also contributes to their prevalent problems.

Further, the independent candidate said the DTDUDF still maintains a zero enemy policy, but it should be on the alert. “We should be wary about self-centered politicians who constantly change parties,” said Lama.

He added there are a total of 82 schemes under the central government out of which only five have been introduced in the Darjeeling hills. If all the schemes were to be launched, the hill people would benefit immensely, observed Lama.
