Kalimpong couple murder case accused on judicial custody

Hanjit Rai (65), the accused of the Kalimpong couple murder case, was today produced at Kalimpong court and has been subsequently sent to three days judicial custody for further investigations by CGM R Chakraborty. Looking at the nature of the crime, the Kalimpong police had requested the court for additional police remand to conduct further intorrogation. Rai was arrested on Thursday night and is yet to inform the police about the motive behind the gruesome murder. He has however confessed to his crime.

The police argue that despite Rai’s confession to the crime the reason for the murder cannot be neglected as it was one of the most gruesome murder the hills has ever seen. The police want to find the real truth behind the twin murder before filing in the charge sheet. According to the police, Rai has been booked under section 326/307/302 and 34 of the IPC. His son Puran Rai has also been indicted in the case under the same IPC sections. Puran was produced before the Kalimpong Court on Friday and has been sent to 14-days in judicial custody.

Notably on Thursday morning, the dead body of Dominic Bhutia and Kristina Bhutia was found in their house in Gidabling near Kalimpong in a pool of blood.Their bodies were severely hacked by a sharp weapon, with deep cuts all over their bodies. The murder shocked the entire Kalimpong town due to the gruesome and inhumane nature of attack on the couple and their 12-year old daughter Yaki Ongmu Bhutia. Yaki was severely injured, but luckily the couple’s 7-year old daughter escaped unhurt. Yaki is currently admitted to a hospital in Siliguri for treatment and is said to be in a stable condition.
