The GJVM also demanded replacement of the existing 66 KV power station by a 132 KV station. “Usage of electronic gadgets has increased rapidly within a short span of time. This contributes to an increase electricity usage. Looking at the future need for electricity, the existing power station will not be enough. The government should install a 132 KV power station to meet the increase in demand,” asserted the GJVM communication secretary.

The GJVM also wants the electricity department to install 33 KV power stations at the Lava-Lolegaon, Gorubathan, Jaldhaka and Pedong-Algara regions to meet increased demand. Further, they want bill collecting offices set up in all the three blocks for the ease of consumers who otherwise need to travel long distances to make payments. The department should also make amendments to the existing meter reading and bill circulation processes, asserted Thapa.

Meanwhile, Roy said the department has already discussed with higher authorities the need tp establish several 132 KV power stations in the region. He said the department will soon make the move once land is identified. Roy also said the department has already taken initiatives to enhance the meter reading and bill circulation processes in town and will soon look into rural areas.

The closure of both the consumer service centre and main block of BSNL Kalimpong that began at 11 am this morning also troubled government officials as they had to wait outside in the hope of the strike getting withdrawn.

The BSNL’s Kalimpong office had been operating normally till Tuesday and the sudden shutdown took everyone aback. The casual workers who had locked themselves up inside the two blocks even declined to talk to reporters who were present to investigate.

Instead of confiding their issues with the media, the striking workers said media coverage would only malign them further.

The abrupt suspension of work paralysed BSNL broadband and telecommunication services in town. With town residents already dissatisfied with the poor quality of internet service by BSNL, the casual workers’ strike has only deepened the resentment of consumers.

Kalimpong hotels asked to clear electricity dues

9:57 AM
Kalimpong, Jan. 24: Hotels here have been asked by the West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd to pay their electricity dues accumulated during the non-co-operation movement for Gorkhaland enforced by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha by January 29.

Kalimpong of ascertaining the reasons for such

The company has primarily targeted the hotels and restaurants of town. The notice states that if power bills up to October 2011 are not paid within January 29, connection will be disconnected.

As part of the non-co-operation movement from April 2008 to July 2011, the people of the Darjeeling hills had been asked not to pay power and telephone bills and sales tax. The notices to clear the dues were issued by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd.

Sources said the distribution utility had decided to realise the dues in the hills at a meeting in Calcutta on December 26 last year. The power utility also decided to accept payments in installments.

The Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association of Kalimpong said each of its 45 members had dues ranging from Rs 2 lakh to over Rs 5 lakh. “Our members have received the notices from the electricity board in the last few days. We are law-abiding citizens and prior to the agitation had always paid our bills on time. It was at the call of the Morcha that we were forced to stop paying our bills to extend our support to the statehood agitation. Now that we are being asked to clear the dues, the party must come to our aid and settle the matter once and for all,” said the president of the association, Sanjogita Subba.

A team of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Kalimpong (HORAK) today met with GJM spokesperson and MLA Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri.

Kalimpong MLA and Morcha spokesman Harka Bahadur Chhetri said he would take up the matter with the power minister in Calcutta soon.

The notice signed by the company’s managing director has been met with strong criticism from hill CPI (M) leader Tara Sundas.

He said, “The meeting on December 26, 2012 at Vidyut Bhawan in Kolkata had resolved several things. Among them was the issuing of notices to residents for paying unpaid dues. GJM chief Bimal Gurung had earlier directed the people not to make payments and he should now take the responsibility of clearing all pending bills. While signing the GTA accord, the GJM leadership had also stressed the people need not pay the bills accrued before August 2011. But the electricity department had continued sending bills of that period to consumers.”

According to the victim, who is a 13 year old girl, Bunty had been making unwelcomed physical advances towards her since past six months. The victim has alleged Bunty used to forcefully expose her to obscene videos in his mobile phone while trying to physically harass her. The victim’s family said since they had been living as tenants in Bunty’s house, the girl had not been able to disclose the matter earlier.

The minor has alleged Bunty used to sexually harass her when there would be no one else in the house. She stated when she would be alone with her four year old brother, Bunty used to take chance to assault her sexually. Reportedly she had abstained from disclosing the issue fearing expulsion from the house. However, family sources said she had been urging her mother to shift to another place since a few months.

The crime came into light only on January 10 when the victim girl shared the details of the incidents with one of her neighbours after the family decided to shift into another house. When her mother came to know about the happenings the matter took another turn as Bunty’s family tried to dismiss the matter, following which the family lodged a complaint with the police.

Victim’s mother said, “My daughter seemed disturbed since past few months but we could not make out the reasons behind her mood. She spoke to me about the incident only after I came to know about it through our neighbor.” She added the police complaint was filed as her daughter herself insisted on it. Meanwhile the victim has also alleged the house owners used to force her to do their household works “like a servant”.
